One Direction Got 'Comfortable' Baring All For 'This Is Us'

'They became artists on 'X Factor,' and were used to having cameras with them at all times,' producer tells MTV News of doc.
By Jocelyn Vena

One Direction have pledged that their 3-D movie release, "This Is Us," will let fans in on everything from the band's ups and downs to their ... bathroom activity.

So with cameras rolling on Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall and Zayn's most intimate moments, did they have any reservations? "This Is Us" producer (and "Best Song Ever" video director) Ben Winston recently revealed to MTV News that the guys actually weren't too uptight when it came time to film.

"The advantage that we've got to make a film about these artists is that they grew up in front of the TV cameras. They became artists on the 'X Factor,' and therefore they were used to having cameras with them at all times," Winston explained.

"So I think they were comfortable with [sharing]. They've known me for quite a few years. They got to know [director] Morgan [Spurlock] really well and they got to know the [rest of the crew]. We're a close unit [and] team and, therefore, we all felt like part of the gang."

While Spurlock — whose credits include the documentaries "Super Size Me" and "Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?" — might seem like an unusual choice to bring 1D's story to the big screen, Winston said he was the perfect director to capture the fellas behind One Direction. And though the movie will document their ups and the downs, Spurlock confirmed this week that those moments won't include Harry's 2012 romance with Taylor Swift.

For Winston, working with Spurlock was just "a great experience."

"I think Morgan has really enjoyed being on the road with the boys," he said. "I think that that we've got a film that really shows who they are and what they can do and it shows off their talent. We've been everywhere. That's the thing: We've been everywhere with them, across the way from Japan to Mexico to L.A. It's been a great experience and I hope people really love the film."

Winston has grown close to the band, even collaborating with the guys on their 2011 doc, "One Direction: A Year in the Making." And according to him, fame hasn't changed them at all: "The most amazing thing is they have remained incredibly normal and humble and caring and considerate ... they are incredibly normal and incredibly lovely and are very grateful for the opportunity they've been given."

"This Is Us," hits theaters on August 30.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's Wednesday Workout

Keeping her body trim for those lingerie photoshoots, Rosie Huntington Whiteley headed to the gym in Studio City, California on Wednesday (July 31).

The Victoria's Secret Angel looked great in a black and pink tank top, black cropped workout tights, and a New York Yankees baseball cap as she returned to her vehicle.

Earlier this month, the 26-year-old British beauty recently bared quite a bit more of her bod in a project for ModelCo on an island near Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Wearing some teeny white denim cutoffs and nothing more, Rosie posed topless for the cosmetics company, with only her arms covering her breasts.

If Ed Sheeran's Marriage Pact Isn't With Taylor Swift, Who Is It?

'I do have one of those pacts,' Sheeran admits to MTV News.

Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran
Photo: Getty Images

Ed Sheeran has had his fair share of headlines written about his personal life.

From hooking up with Selena Gomez — "Well she's dating Bieber, isn't she?" Sheeran said — to nearly stabbing Taylor Swift with a "Lord of the Rings" prop — "It was just about to impale Taylor" — the "Everything Has Changed" singer is accustomed to seeing his name in the news.

"There's lots of stuff in the press and some of it's very unbelievable and some of it isn't," the VMA nominee said. "Some of it's true and some of it isn't."

Ed recently shot down the rumor where he and Red tourmate Taylor Swift have a fallback marriage pact. In the alleged deal, the pair promised to get married if they were both single by the age of 30.

"I don't know where that comes from, it's usually from a source and it's usually from someone who doesn't know the person," Sheeran explained.

But even though wedding bells might not be in Swift and Sheeran's future, that doesn't mean a similar deal hasn't been made by the redhead. "That story isn't true. I do have one of those pacts with a friend actually — my next door neighbor but it's [for when we're] 40," he admitted.

"We got the pact from 'Friends,' " Sheeran said, referring to an episode where four of the show's characters made similar commitments. "We watched 'Friends' and we were like 'oh that sounds like a good idea' but I don't really want to reproduce with you right now."

A$AP Rocky Ditching 'Gold Teeth And Swag' For Cinematic 'Phoenix' Video

Harlem rapper talks to MTV News about capturing those moments when 'you don't even wanna live anymore' with his new clip.
By Nadeska Alexis, with additional reporting by Gabrielle Wilson

A$AP Rocky's "F----n' Problems" is nominated for Best Hip Hop Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and while the Harlem rapper admits he wasn't expecting a nod for that particular clip, his upcoming visuals for Long.Live.A$AP's "Phoenix" might prove to be his most lauded release yet.

On the "Phoenix" video set in New York City, A$AP explained that his usual fly trimmings just wouldn't be sufficient for a song that cuts so deep.

"This is one of the more serious songs on my album, so people are really expecting something cinematic from this video," Lord Pretty Flacko told MTV News. "They don't expect the average...me with my gold teeth and swag, it's just really about a life message."

"My whole album is based upon life," he added. "It's just showing that we vicariously live forever. Tupac, Biggie, Elvis Presley, John Legend, Basquiat are living through all of us because we bring them up every day."

A$AP Rocky and director Francesco Carrozzini recruited an all-star cast for the dramatic clip, including The Wire's Michael K. Williams and supermodel Joan Smalls. "With a talent like [Rocky,] you just want to make something that people will remember," Carrozzini told MTV News. "And we were able to involve Michael K. Williams and Joan Small in the video too, which is gonna make it pretty dope."

Without giving away too much of the video's storyline, Joan Smalls explained her role in the clip. "Michael K. Williams and myself, we're a couple. We had a late night out and I find out something extremely shocking, and when we come back home, we start arguing and it just develops into something so tumultuous and intense that I let my rage take control of me."

Before A$AP's album dropped in January, he addressed the painful lyrics on "Phoenix" explaining his references to fallen icons like Michael Jackson and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain ("Bloody ink on my pad spelled suicide/Michael Jackson even passed 'cause you scrutinized").

"Those are natural feelings that we all get sometimes. You hurt so bad and you're going through so much pain to the point where sometimes you don't even wanna live anymore," he told MTV News at the time. "That's how a lot of people think, whether we'd like to admit it or not and that's all I was showcasing. It was that emotion...suicidal kinda emotions."

Still, A$AP adds that the song's message is one of reincarnation and the potential to live forever. "It's all about living, and 'Phoenix' is being reincarnated through your own ashes, so it's just more of a serious note," he said.

Amanda Bynes Hospitalized On 5150: Inside Her Past 72 Hours

'Sometimes they won't remember what they did and you have to show them pictures or police reports because they don't believe you,' says psychiatrist Dr. Jody Rawles.
By Gil Kaufman

Amanda Bynes

Almost three days after being put on a psychiatric hold
, Amanda Bynes could be released from a California hospital on Thursday evening (July 25).

After setting a fire on a stranger's driveway
in Thousand Oaks, California on Monday night, the actress was taken in under a 5150 hold, a California code that allows doctors or law enforcement officials to detain a person involuntarily for 72 hours if they are deemed a danger to themselves or others or display a grave disability that renders them unable to provide for their own food, clothing and shelter.

Take A Look At Amanda Bynes: Then And Now.

But what happens during a 5150 hold? MTV News spoke to Dr. Jody M. Rawles, a psychiatrist and the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the psychiatry department at the University of California Irvine for some insight into the three-day hold.

Rawles, who does not have first hand knowledge of the Bynes case and was speaking in general terms about his extensive experience with 5150 cases, said emergency room physicians, psychiatrists, police officers and some social workers are among those who have the ability to request a hold. "If you are setting fires on someone else's property and are disorganized and give answers to questions that don't make sense, a peace officer might put in for a 5150 on all three [criteria]," said Rawles, who runs the acute inpatient unit at UC-Irvine.

The 72 hours begins as soon as the officer writes the 5150 request, after which the patient is transported to an emergency room, where blood and urine screens are done to make sure the patient has not overdosed on drugs and does not have a critical medical problem. Once they are medically cleared, they are admitted to the psychiatric inpatient unit.

"We start by interviewing the patient and I like to ask 'when did you get here?' which is an easy, friendly question that is about orientation," he said. "If they say they've been there for days, I know they're confused." Then, assuming the patient gives consent, doctors can gather information from other sources, including family. If the patient refuses to grant permission, though, doctors are not allowed to contact family or others who know the patient.

After the interview, Rawles will provide medications if the patient is willing to take them, noting that if that person is harming themselves he has the right to force medications. "If they're banging their head against the wall repeatedly you can medicate them against their will, but if they're just speaking gibberish you can't," he said. The initial intake usually takes around 12 hours, which leaves Rawles just two-and-a-half days to evaluate and treat.

Read Everything We Know So Far About The Incident That Sent Bynes To The Hospital.

Sometimes, it is clear that the incident that spurred the 5150 is drug related, so Rawles will counsel the patient about the dangers of drug abuse and stage what he referred to as a "bedside intervention."

By the second day, if it's possible to make a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or a similar serious psychiatric condition that might benefit from medication, Rawles will counsel that psychotherapy might work, but that the gold standard is a combination of talk therapy and medication. "I'll talk about the risk and benefits of medication and the side effects and try to get them started on [medication]," he said. "I'll also tell them this is the best place to do that so if there is a side effect we can monitor it and adjust the meds."

The goal is to get the medication started and make the patient realize that they feel better on it. "Sometimes they won't remember what they did and you have to show them pictures or police reports because they don't believe you," he said. There are also cases, he noted, when it takes several 5150 holds, in addition to DUI's or other police interactions, for a patient to realize they have a problem.

By the third day the person can either be released with no strings if they seem stabilized and no longer a danger to themselves or others or they can voluntarily agree to further inpatient treatment. A third option is a request for a 5250, which allows doctors to hold them for an additional 14 days if they feel the patient is still a danger or unable to take care of themselves.

"But after that 14 days, 17 total, if you're looking down the road and she's not getting it and it looks like you're just going to release her?" he said. "There's nothing else you can do." At press time there were unconfirmed reports that Bynes' doctors might be requesting a 5250 to allow time for further treatment.

- Rob drove the town car out of the driveway, and reversed it back in to reset the shot. The boy knows how to drive! Jerome took the wheel!
- He got out of the town car and was hanging out while they were setting up, went back to his trailer once with Dean at his side.
- He filmed one more scene with Julianne Moore. She was in a lavender dress. They both got into the back seat of the town car, then later on Julianne Moore got out of the car, wiped her leg with a scarf and walked off. ;)
- In between takes, him and Julianne were talking, he was sitting in the backseat of the car and they looked like they were having a good time. Rob got expressive with his hands. Lol
- Mia was also there, black top, purple skirt with her Agatha gloves on :)
- Caitlin was also there, didn’t see David though.
- It looked like Rob was wrapping up since he was shaking people’s hands. Dean hugged someone (who knew? Lol)
- At the beginning of the shoot he had the full suit on…and then by the time he left, his dress shirt was pulled open at the front, not tucked in and his white tee was underneath. Yum. See the rumpled and disheveled shirt in some of the pics?
- He looked very happy on set, didn’t stop to say hi or anything, but am just happy I got to see him!

Official Press Release: 'Maps To The Starts' Starts Filming + Synopsis and Details About Rob's Character

ETA: Screendaily relesed the first official image of the movie. A behind the scenes still of Cronenberg, Olivia Williams and John Cusack. Unfortunatelly, no Rob yet. Click for UHQ.
ETA2: Added a second 'Maps To The Stars' image. A still of John Cusack's character (Variety)

"Cosmopolis" star Robert Pattinson is moving from the back seat of a limousine to the front, as "Maps to the Stars," his next collaboration with director David Cronenberg, has started its 30-day shoot, which runs through August in Toronto and Los Angeles.

Entertainment One and Prospero Pictures are co-financing the Los Angeles-set movie, which stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, Sarah Gadon, Evan Bird and Pattinson.

A contemporary tale exploring the demons of our celebrity-obsessed society, story follows the Weiss family, which is led by Stafford (Cusack), a psychotherapist and life coach who made his fortune with self-help books. His wife (Williams) is the overbearing mother-manager of their 13-year-old son (Bird), a TV star recently out of drug rehab. Their estranged daughter (Wasikowska) has just been released from a psychiatric hospital and befriended a limo driver (Pattinson) who is also an aspiring actor.

One of Stafford's celebrity clients is Havana (Moore), an actress with an unusual new assistant. Havana’s dream of reprising her dead mother’s (Gadon) starring role from the 1960s slowly crumbles while ghosts, death and all manner of vices collide.

Cronenberg is directing "Maps to the Stars" from a script by Bruce Wagner. The film is produced by Prospero Pictures founder Martin Katz, as well as SBS Productions’ SaĂŻd Ben SaĂŻd ("Carnage") and Michel Merkt. Sentient Entertainment's Renee Tab and eOne’s Benedict Carver are exec producing. Integral Films’ Alfred HĂĽrmer co-produces, while longtime Cronenberg collaborator Walter Gasparovic serves as associate producer.

"'Maps to the Stars' marks a return to the shocking and audacious cinema Cronenberg fans love, with a fantastic cast of award-winners and hugely talented newcomers," said Katz.

eOne Films International is handling worldwide rights, and eOne will directly distribute "Maps to the Stars" in the U.S., Canada, the UK and Australia/New Zealand. The film is produced with the support of Telefilm Canada, The Ontario Media Development Corporation, and the Harold Greenberg Fund.

Fruitvale Station's success a 'surprise' for first-time director Ryan Coogler

Made for less than $1m, Coogler's first feature film is garnering early Oscars buzz for its riveting portrayal of Oscar Grant

When Ryan Coogler decided to make a film about the real-life story of a young black man killed by a white transit police officer he had modest expectations.

Coogler was an untried, first-time director. Few outside the black community in Oakland, California, had heard of – or cared about – his subject, Oscar Grant, gunned down on a train platform on new year's day 2009.

Hollywood, and by extension audiences, were assumed to have limited appetite for a rounded portrait of a small time ex-con who died as he lived, anonymous.

Yet Fruitvale Station, named after the station where Grant died, has this week burst into the box office top 10, powered by glowing reviews, word-of-mouth buzz and an anguished national debate over the Trayvon Martin case.

"I just wanted to raise awareness about this certain issue, about this person, Oscar," Coogler, 27, who also wrote the film, told the Guardian in an interview on Monday. "This reception … is a great achievement for the film-makers involved. I've been surprised at every step of the way of the process."

Coogler said he hoped moviegoers, regardless of colour or background, would relate in some way to Grant, played by Michael B Jordan, who made his name on The Wire.

"The most moving thing is to see it open in theatres. Our hope was to focus on the specifics of Oscar's life. I wanted people to see a little of themselves in Oscar even if they were outside of that community."

After a limited initial release Fruitvale Station opened across the US last weekend, showing in more than 1,000 theatres. Garlanded at Sundance and selected for Cannes, it is tipped for Academy Award glory.

Coogler's film arrives amid debate over racism, gun violence and the killing of young black men in the wake of George Zimmerman's acquittal earlier this month for shooting Martin, an unarmed teenager who was visiting his father in Florida.

There are parallels with Grant, a 22-year-old who was returning home after celebrating new year's eve in San Francisco when police detained him and several friends following a fight on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) train.

Grant was lying on his stomach, handcuffed, when an officer, Johannes Mehserle, shot him in the back. Mehserle said he intended to reach for a Taser and shot by mistake. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years.

The independent film, made for less than $1m, has triumphed critically and commercially during the so-called "summer of doom" for Hollywood blockbusters, with audiences ignoring many mega-budget productions.

What is the value of a young black man's life – a question that should have been settled a long time ago – had been posed anew with uncanny timing and force, said David Denby in the New Yorker.

It opens with real videophone footage of the shooting, then rewinds to a partially fictionalised account of the last 24 hours of a convicted felon with a quick temper who adores his mother, cheats on his girlfriend, dotes on their daughter and tries to go straight.

"One has the sense of a man being slowly, surely written back into being," wrote the Guardian's reviewer.

Coogler, who is from Oakland and studied film at the University of Southern California, said race could obscure another's humanity. This galvanised him to create a rounded character. "How somebody looks plays into how I feel about someone. If you're African American in this society oftentimes a lot of negative processes come from that, from just looking at you."

The film touched on the fact so many young black men died on US streets, he said. "Homicide through gun violence is the leading cause of death among young African American males in the United States. If people look a certain way they have a higher tendency of dying, of having their lives taken away."

The violence had multiple sources and did not always cross racial boundaries, he noted. "Black on black crime is a massive human rights issue that's going on in America," he said.

Coogler praised President Obama's recent speech about race and growing up a young black man, a subject of suspicion.

"Every human being feels their own reality and it's difficult to understand someone else's reality until you walk in their shoes. He was being very honest and open about his own particular reality. Sometimes when you do that you run the risk of turning people off, the people who haven't had that experience. So I think what he did was very honest and very brave."

Fruitvale Station, which stars Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer as Grant's mother, focused on the loss of a losing a loved one. "It's the human element. People are gone, they can't come back. I was really interested in looking at it from about the lives of the people most affected."

The Weinstein Company, which bought and distributed the film, said the release date was planned before the Zimmerman trial started.

Coogler and Jordan are due to team up again to make Creed, a spin-off of the Rocky saga in which the grandson of Apollo Creed, Rocky's rival and friend, takes up the gloves. Sylvester Stallone is due to reprise the role which made him a star in what would be the ageing pugilist's seventh cinema outing.

That film is in the early stages, said Coogler, who will write and direct. Like Fruitvale, it would be a very personal project, he said. "It's about an experience I had with someone very close to me. Rocky was my father's favourite movie."

In the first look at the summer flick, Alexandra Daddario hatches a plan to save her demigod friends — including Logan Lerman.

"Bigger story, bigger monsters, bigger effects."

That's the promise Logan Lerman made to us about the follow-up to 2010's YA riff on Greek mythology. One look at the trailer we debuted last spring made clear Logan wasn't messing around.

A brand-new exclusive clip, however, shows off the quieter side of "Sea of Monsters" — though it's a side with stakes just as big. In the fresh footage, Camp Half-Blood — the training area where Lerman's Percy and his friends are holed up after the events of the first film — is under attack, and the demigod Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario) and her half-human, half-goat satyr pal Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) have a plan to keep everyone safe. But the camp's head honcho, Dionysus, (a scene-stealing Stanley Tucci) isn't so keen on the idea.

"If you could just listen to me for one moment," Annabeth says.

"I am listening — you want to go on a quest," Dionysus replies. "Oh, it must be Thursday."

The quest she wants to go on is the one that propels "Sea of Monsters" forward — and the one that brings Percy and his friends face-to-face with those enormous monsters: they need to find the mythical Golden Fleece, which can heal anything, including the barrier that protects Half-Blood from attack.

Sipping his wine (as gods of wine are wont to do), Dionysus explains why this is not a smart plan — namely because of the prospect of near-certain death as one enters the Sea of Monsters, known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle.

"[I]t's a risk I'm willing to take for the good of the camp," Grover says.

Dionysus responds, "It's a terrible idea."

Perhaps. But that doesn't mean they won't give it a try.

"Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" hits theaters on August 7.
