Backstreet Boys Reunite on Good Morning America, Still Want it That Way

Backstreet's back, alright.

For the first time in six years, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean and Kevin Richardson reunited as the five Backstreet Boys performed live on Good Morning America's Summer Concert series in New York's Central Park.

The quintet sang "Incomplete," "I Want It That Way" and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." Check out their GMA reunion concert below and see what you think:

Afterward, the show's news anchor, Josh Elliott, referring to absent co-host Robin Roberts - who on Thursday both departed the show to begin medical treatments and lost her mother, 88-year-old Lucimarian - said, "Robin, that one was for you."

Be well, Robin, and stay strong.

Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves' Big Apple Family Stroll

While Camila Alves' pregnant belly keeps growing, her hubby Matthew McConaughey is withering away as the pair grabbed a bite to eat in New York City on Friday (August 31).

Taking their impeccably dressed children by the hand, the Brazilian-American model lead the way in a stunning floor length black maxi while a few steps back her "Magic Mike" husband looked casual in jeans and a wrinkly button-up.

With baby number three on the way, the 30-year-old recently gave expecting mothers some fashion advice telling Us Weekly, "Do not be afraid to be sexy while you're pregnant. I'm learning that on my third pregnancy. I'm like, "Oh wow, you don't have to wear just flowing things."'

As for Matthew's rapidly declining weight, the 42-year-old actor is preparing for his role in "The Dallas Buyer's Club" where he plays a frail HIV patient determined to defy all odds after being told to "go home and die."

Heidi Klum's Romantic Sardina Trip with Bodyguard

Could a new relationship be blooming? It seems that Heidi Klum headed off to Sardinia, Italy for a romantic getaway with her reported bodyguard just seven months after calling it quits with her husband Seal.

The "Project Runway" babe was pictured lounging on the beach at the Porto Cervo seaside resort in a tiny Aztec-print bikini while chatting it up with her new tattooed beau on August 14 and 15.

During the vacation, the 39-year-old stunner didn't hold back any public displays of affection as the alleged couple casually wrapped their arms around each other while walking along the shore.

Although the two appear to be in the beginnings of a steamy romance, Seal did make an appearance on the trip to spend time with his children.

Miss Klum has known the alleged lover for years, as pictures prove the man has accompanied Heidi and Seal on family vacations and skiing holidays to Aspen, Colorado. He's even accompanied the former Victoria's Secret model on several outdoor workout sessions.

The Honey Badger Meets Honey Boo Boo [Video]

The Honey Badger is one crazy, nasty ass creature. As one wildly popular and hilarious video once warned us, you do NOT want to mess with this animal.

He doesn't give a you-know-what. He will simply take you and yours down!

Remind you of another (unfortunately) beloved specimen? One whose popularity continues to sky-rocket and who may earn more votes than the Republican nominee for President?

Yes, we're talking about Honey Boo Boo and her eerie similarities to the Honey Badger. See what we mean in the following video:

Talking about her son, Rudy:
“He has what I had and more. We’ve done that kind of Italian thing, where he’s grown up with all our families. I can go to work and there’s no sense of abandonment,” she says. “He’s so easy, so calm, I’ve never seen anyone so happy. I don’t know how he’s so calm with me and Charlie as parents!” Not only that: he has R-Patz as a godfather, by the way. “Yeah, Rudy’s very lucky. He’s got some cool godparents!”

Kristen Stewart's Parents Slated to Divorce

Kristen Stewart's name is back in the news today (August 31) as her mother Jules Mann-Stewart filed for divorce.

The "Twilight" star's parents have been estranged since June 2010, but made the separation official with a divorce petition, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on August 17.

The couple has been married for 27 years, and in court documents, Jules cited “irreconcilable differences” as reason for the divorce.

The 22-year-old actress has had her own romance problems lately, as word broke earlier this summer that she was involved in an affair with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders.

David Cronenberg and Paul Giamatti Talk About Rob

David Cronenberg talks about Rob

From Oregon Live (click to read the full interview)
Given the heavy New York atmosphere of the film, it’s something of a surprise that Cronenberg should have chosen the British actor Robert Pattinson for the lead role. Pattison is best known, of course, for the relatively featherweight demands of the “Twilight” films, which reveal little of the heavy, internal and intellectual stuff that “Cosmopolis” demands. After declaring that “casting is a black art: there’s no rule book to guide you,” Cronenberg explains that he watched some of Pattinson’s non-“Twilight” work, especially “Little Ashes,” in which he played the young Salvador Dalí, and felt he’d found his man. Still, he admits, there is, in all such matters, a leap of faith.

“It’s just intuiting that he can do the role,” he says. “Because you’re asking him here to do things he hasn’t done before. But I was convinced by the time that I had done all my work that he was the right guy. I knew he was good, and he surprised me by how good he was.”

From IFC (click to read the full interview)
IFC: You mentioned wanting to see great actors speak the dialogue, and the movie is filled with them. But I’m curious about Robert Pattinson, who’s still a young actor and doesn’t have nearly as much experience as some of the supporting cast, but has a massive following. When you have a project like this, do you do more tailoring of the script to fit his strengths, or more work with him to match his abilities and talents to the material?
CRONENBERG:
For all the actors, you don’t really know what you’re going to get. Except for some auditions that a few actors did for certain roles, I never heard the dialogue spoken until we were shooting. With Rob in particular, I never heard that particular dialogue spoken until we were shooting. You go into filming with confidence that you have the right guy, but you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. There’s a very organic thing that goes on in “Cosmopolis” that’s very spontaneous, because until Robert’s sitting in the limo with the actual actor opposite him who he’s playing the scene with — and there are so many different actors who come in and out of that limo — he doesn’t know how he’s going to react, because he’s not acting in a vacuum. He’s reacting to the other actor. . . . For example, the very first scene we shot was in the limo with Jay Baruchel. Rob was shocked by how Jay was playing it, because he was playing it with so much emotion and vulnerability, and Rob had never anticipated that. So he had to react to that. That’s the excitement of the movie: you mix all of these things that are potent and good, but you don’t really know what you’re going to get from that.

IFC: It’s sort of like cooking…
CRONENBERG: [Laughs] Yes, it is. It’s like cooking a meal you’ve never made before.

(...)

----- SPOILERS -----

IFC: On the subject of changes form the source material, I’m going to get into spoiler territory here for a moment and ask you about the end of the movie and how it differs from the book. The movie leaves things more uncertain than the book, it seems…
CRONENBERG:
It’s hard to discuss without spoilers, but it would’ve been very easy to put a gunshot on the soundtrack and you would know that Eric was murdered. And in the book you know that he’s murdered, or at least if you believe Benno, he’s been murdered — but that’s the thing, because Benno is not exactly a trustworthy narrator. In the book there is still some scope for uncertainty as to Eric’s fate, but as we were shooting that last scene, I loved that these two guys were frozen in that last moment — almost frozen in an eternity of uncertainty. They’re bound together. They’re locked together in this sort of archetypal moment. I thought the moment should be eternal.

IFC: I can picture you going, “And cut it right… there!”
CRONENBERG:
[Laughs] Basically, yeah. So it was more like that than a dramatic thing. It wasn’t like, “Oh, I can’t stand to have this character killed,” or “Rob’s fans won’t like it if I shoot Robert,” or anything like that. I wasn’t worry about that stuff. It was really spontaneous. As I mentioned, we could’ve easily made it clear that he’s killed, cutting to black with the sound of a gunshot.

----- END OF SPOILERS -----

Paul Giamatti talks about his scene with Rob

From Indiewire (click to read the full interview)
How did you wrestle with the verbose dialogue and own it? You essentially talk in wordy, extended diatribes in your scene opposite Robert Pattinson.
Well, I mean it was nice dialogue to say. It’s eccentric, and it’s definitely got a rhythm. It was a bit of a trick to feel your way into it. My character, he’s got a very elaborate fantasy life. He’s got a very intense story playing out in his own head about the other guy and about himself and this relationship. So I think one of the ways it helped me to feel like I could bring the dialogue to life was to make sure that I was constructing this elaborate, emotional life behind all these words so I could connect them all up. And it was weird, the leaps and logic between the speeches -- all of a sudden somebody would start talking about something that seems completely unconnected. So I had to make all these connections, and once I could emotionally figure out what was going on, the words then came pretty easily.

"Something about his style as a filmmaker seems to fit well with the book." It’s odd dialogue, it seems very kind of bare. I don't know if it’s very complex and intellectual, but it actually comes to an emotional life very well, at least for me. And I think that guy is, as you say, in some ways the most sympathetic because he’s the most visibly emotionally engaged.

Was it difficult to act opposite Pattinson, whose character is beyond detached from any semblance of emotion? Or did his passivity fuel the scene?
It's like a therapy session in that you keep switching back and forth between, who’s the therapist and who’s the patient? And so yes, some of his passivity absolutely brought a lot of it to life for me.

How long did you and Robert have to shoot the scene?
I think it took us about two-and-a-half days, maybe? You know, it’s a long scene. I think it was nearly twenty pages long, which is a lot for a single scene. So they had set aside maybe four or five days, but it only took us two and a half.

From Film School Rejects (click to read the full interview)
The tone of Cosmopolis is this very straight-faced, serious type of wacky. How did Cronenberg describe the tone to you?
You know, he didn’t, in a lot of ways. I think he just trusted we’d get a sense of it. Even though the dialogue is very odd, you know what his sensibility is anyway, so you kind of know what the tone is. I did something I don’t normally do on a movie…I just came in at the end, after they shot most of the movie, and I asked David if I could watch the footage, because I wanted to see the tone of the movie and what Rob looked like, talked like, and moved like. I felt it was something I needed to see, because I’m playing a guy who always has a fantasy of him in his head. I did ask to see the footage for exactly what you just said: it’s an odd tone. I wanted to just watch some of it, so I could see how I could fit into it and, in some ways, veer off of it.

(...)

It is similar to a few of his previous film in how abstract the story can be at times. When you get a script this dense and full of symbolism, do you try to apply meaning to everything or do you just go with it?
In this instance, with this script, I read this whole script many, many times. I usually do that anyway, but, on this, it felt essential for me to read it a bunch of times. It wasn’t about just concentrating on my stuff, partially because it was so interesting. I just had such a good time reading it and thinking about it. Like you said, there’s a tonal thing, and I needed to have a sense of that in my head. I also feel like the character has a real awareness of Rob’s character, so I felt like I needed to know Rob’s character. Certainly, in my scenes, it all had to make crystal sense to me [Laughs].

All It Takes to Meet Robert Pattinson Is the Right Craigslist Ad

(Photo: Getty Images)

Robert Pattinson continued to distract himself with his promotional run for Cosmopolis last night with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! While he avoided talking about his feelings surrounding his recent breakup, Pattinson did reveal some interesting information regarding his shopping habits.

Apparently all it takes to get Pattinson to your house is an intriguing classified ad. "I buy everything off Craigslist," RPattz told the late-night host. Although he's a multimillionaire celebrity, Pattinson described himself as "incredibly cheap" during his appearance on The Daily Show earlier this month, and his Craigslist bargain hunting proves he wasn't just trying to be humble.

Pattison's latest online find was a modest $2,500 pickup truck he tracked down in the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills. "I got a 2001 Silverado. It's beautiful. Solid car," he insisted. As Pattinson tells it, this particular purchase came from "this guy who lived with his parents. We were talking about gas prices, going, 'I know man. It's crazy.'" The guy had no idea he was talking to a mega-star. Which explains his poor negotiating skills. "He didn't really understand the concept of negotiating," Pattinson recounted. "I [got him down] 300 bucks and his comeback was, 'What about 50 bucks more?'"

According to Pattinson, every vehicle he's ever purchased came from a Craigslist ad, including his first car, a 1989 BMW he found for $1,000 that has since "blown up." So let this be a lesson to you Twilight fans out there: If you're selling a car, do so in the greater Los Angeles area. You just might end up bartering with Edward Cullen himself.

Slinged Up Cheryl Cole Laughs with Fans After Will.i.am Wreck

Cheryl Cole
Wearing a Sling, Cheryl Cole Laughs with Fans After Car Crash With Will.i.am

With her left arm tucked into a sling, Cheryl Cole seems to have put her nasty car accident behind her as she greeted fans today (August 31).

The Girls Aloud star and Black Eyed Peas singer Will.i.am were involved in an automobile bang-up in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

They were on their way home after working together at a recording studio. Both were reportedly bleeding from the nose when medics arrived at the scene.

But on Friday Miss Cole laughed off the incident as she arrived at the BBC radio studios in London, England.

Looking totally unshaken in a claret top and pants, the 29-year-old singer assured fans she was fine as she signed autographs outside the studio.

Before her trip to the BBC she had an interview at London's Capital Radio across the city.

She jokingly said Will.i.am may have caused the accident because he was busy chatting away to her when his Cadillac collided into a parked vehicle.

Speaking of the sling, Cheryl told her interviewer, "You know what, I think it's actually hurting more to have it in the sling than it does when it's not in there.

"I was just told to wear it for three days. I'm following doctor's orders."

RZA Recalls Learning From 'The Master' Quentin Tarantino

'The Man With the Iron Fists' creator tells MTV News his mentor is 'an encyclopedia and such a genius of film.'
By Ryan J. Downey

RZA in "The Man with the Iron Fists"

RZA's affinity for martial arts films has been well known since Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) changed hip-hop in 1993. So, when RZA described Quentin Tarantino's mentorship over his budding movie-directing career, he put it in kung-fu terms.

"When I met Quentin Tarantino, I kind of met my, as we say in martial arts, my Sifu," RZA told MTV News, using the Chinese word for "master." "I asked him if I could become a student of his. That's a very humbling thing, especially for the RZA," he noted.

The Wu-Tang mastermind co-wrote, directed and starred in this fall's "The Man With the Iron Fists," which also stars Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu and boasts a predictably killer soundtrack featuring Kanye West and the Black Keys. RZA made a cameo in Jim Jarmusch's "Ghost Dog" in the late '90s and worked on music for action maestro John Woo, too. But befriending the "Pulp Fiction" writer/director took things to a new level.

RZA, whose hip-hop aliases have included "the Scientist" and "the Abbot," said, "My fans look up to me as a teacher, but [Quentin] is such an encyclopedia and such a genius of film, I couldn't find a better teacher. I always tell people: I've been taught by the master."

RZA came up with the action-packed story of a blacksmith in feudal China, which he polished with fellow Tarantino buddy Eli Roth.

"After some years of hanging around and picking up the knowledge shall we say, I felt I was ready," he recalled. "I went to him and asked him. Me and Eli Roth had a screenplay we wrote, and Quentin gave me the blessing: 'Yeah, I think you're ready. You guys can go ahead and live it out.' "

The cast soon expanded to include Crowe (as "Jackknife"), Liu ("Madam Blossom") and blaxploitation legend Pam Grier, who famously starred as the title character in Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." RZA himself appears, but the character named "The Abbott" is actually played by Chia Hui Liu, who had roles in both "Kill Bill" movies as well as a 1978 classic we're pretty sure RZA has seen: "The 36 Chambers of Shaolin."

RZA credited Universal Pictures for taking a chance on his directorial debut, which is due November 2. "Fortunately and luckily, the new regime at Universal is a really good group of people," he said. "This isn't the typical Hollywood thing where you've got guys who've already proven themselves, but I think this regime felt compelled to give an artist that shot. And I was that artist. And here we are with 'The Man With the Iron Fists.' "

Werner Herzog to direct Killers webcast

Legendary film-maker to helm live streaming of Killers show in New York in September. Expect live animals, says bassist

No mere pop promo director is good enough for the Killers' next webcast – legendary film-maker Werner Herzog is to direct the band's forthcoming concert video, to be broadcast live on 18 September.

Anyone with an internet connection will be able to tune in to the concert at New York's Paradise Theatre, which will be streamed on YouTube. It's the 11th in the American Express Unstaged series, which previously saw Arcade Fire team up with Terry Gilliam, Duran Duran with David Lynch, and John Legend with Spike Lee.

"I think there's gonna be an animal involved," bassist Mark Stoermer told Rolling Stone, regarding Herzog's plans. "He has ideas for someone crowd-surfing with a camera on … [and] he's gonna put cameras on Ronnie [Vannucci Jr] while he's playing drums."

Herzog is certainly an unconventional pick for a concert film: with epics such as Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, the Wrath of God, he became known for an obsessive work process. More recently, documentaries such as Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World mixed soul-searching gravitas with screwball flights of fancy. While he has stayed away from music videos, his 1994 documentary The Transformation of the World into Music explored Bayreuth's Wagner festival, and Herzog has helmed numerous operas for the stage. The director also has a long working relationship with theGerman band Popol Vuh.

"He definitely wanted to make the best version of this live Amex performance of any director so far," Stoermer said. "I'm sure it will be all done the right way."

The Killers' fourth studio album, Battle Born, is due on 17 September.

‘Twilight’ Almost Ruined Robert Pattinson’s Career, Says Friend

Rob's 'Cosmopolis' director, David Cronenberg, says that the 'Twilight' films led people to think that Rob isn't a good actor! Can you believe it?

The Twilight saga has made Robert Pattinson into one of the biggest celebrities in the world, but is it possible that they've also made people consider Rob as an actor who isn't very good? David Cronenberg, his Cosmopolis director, sure thinks so! In an interview promoting their film, David tells French FnacTV that he thinks the success of the Twilight films push people to think negatively about Rob, when explaining why he chose him for the film. "I had seen a few movies he had done," David says. "Of course, I'd seen Twilight, but I saw other movies as well and I was convinced, finally, that he had the right presence and he had the right dramatic range to play this role even though I know that because Twilight was so successful, many people would like to say, 'Oh, he's not really a very good actor, it's the vampire make-up.'" David says that even though he felt people had that perception of Rob, the massive success of the Twilight films also are what made it

Taylor Swift's “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” Music Video: Watch Now!

It's still holding firm in the number one spot in iTunes, and now Taylor Swift has treated fans to the music video accompanying her hot, new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.

Dropping the visual creation on Thursday night (August 30), the 22-year-old country superstar can be seen adorned in a sassy little frock with her signature red lips as she dances it up throughout the 3:11 long production.

Directing the action was Declan Whitebloom, who also helmed music videos for Taylor's tracks "Mean" and "Ours," as he impressively shot the latest effort with only one camera in one continuous take.

Already breaking sales records, "Never Ever" is included in Miss Swift's forthcoming fourth studio album “Red” - which will see in its release on October 22nd.

Slaughterhouse Say There's Nothing Pop About Welcome To: Our House

Royce da 5'9" tells 'RapFix Live' the tracks on the group's first major-label LP come from the 'heart.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

There's a tremendous weight on the collective shoulders of Slaughterhouse. The Shady lyrical assassins have just released their first major label LP Welcome to: Our House, and while it's a great accomplishment for Royce da 5'9," Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Joe Budden, hip-hop fans seem to have a lot riding on the album as well.

The fact is, lyricism isn't as celebrated as it once was and less technically skilled MCs can often get away with crafted radio hits that focus on danceable beats and catchy chorus. But if purebred rap titans like Slaughterhouse can make a significant dent in SoundScan when sales figures are tallied next week, their success could open doors for more lyrically inclined MCs. That's the message Royce da 5'9" wanted to deliver when he and his crew appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."

"My demand to the fans is: Go to the record store and buy this album. Do that for hip-hop," Royce stated sternly.

Each of SH's four members have toiled in hip-hop's underground as soloists raising rap's lyrical bar. Unfortunately, their efforts haven't garnered much radio play or platinum and gold plaques, but still each MC was celebrated. Expectations were unbelievably high when the group put out their self-titled debut album in 2009, and now that they've inked a high-profile deal with rap juggernaut Eminem for their second LP, they're astronomic.

"I feel like the people expect the highest level of lyricism from us, but at times I feel like they don't want us to be happy," Royce said, laughing at the group's catch-22 scenario. "They don't want us to sell records; they just want us to rap better than everybody."

When the House Gang dropped their Cee Lo Green-assisted "My Life," a celebratory track that samples Italian band Corona's 1993 dance hit "The Rhythm of the Night," rap diehards groaned at the catchy hook and danceable beat. The single fit top 40 radio formats but didn't impact the charts as expected. "The second we give radio something that they can play it's like, 'What are they doin'? They're tryin' to go commercial,' " Royce said, mimicking fan criticism. "Go commercial? I thought that's what you had to do to feed your family, am I wrong?"

Crooked went on to point out that the song featured Goodie Mob, who, despite his pop success as a soloist and a member of Gnarls Barkley, got his start in the Dungeon Family, a gritty Atlanta rap collective that also housed OutKast.

Royce da 5'9" contends that no matter what, Slaughterhouse will keep their lyrics cutting edge. "Went from no office to offers/ I told ya I'ma get my daddy out the post office," he spit on the "RapFix" couch, reciting his lyrics from "My Life." "What is pop about that? That came from my heart."

Since the group's formation in late 2008, Royce and the House Gang feel like they have given the fans everything they asked for. On August 19, just days before their album release, SH dropped On the House, a free, 13-track mixtape to thank fans and promote Welcome to: Our House. Now the crew is looking to get something back from their fans.

"I feel like fans make demands. Fans become spoiled because we're wired to make sure that we follow their every need," Royce reasoned. "I think that this is a day where the artist can make a demand to the fans."

The Myth of the American Sleepover – review

David Robert Mitchell's sweet, sexless drama isn't going to get it on with Henry Barnes

The teens of suburban Detroit are spending the last nights of their summer at pyjama parties, stupefied and waiting for escape. Except Scott (Brett Jacobsen), a college dropout who's tracking down a pair of twins he had a crush on in high school. Scott's quest is at the heart of the problem with writer/director David Robert Mitchell's sweet, sexless drama. Presumably not all kids are roaming as wildly as Larry Clark's little heathens, but this film's reverence to three little words ("I like you") is chastity-band creepy. I like you, too, Myth of the American Sleepover – but I'm going no further than that.

Murdoch backs anti-Obama doc

Australian-born magnate urges US voters to go and see 2016: Obama's America 'and decide for self what future they want'

Rupert Murdoch has urged all American voters to go and see an anti-Barack Obama documentary which has proven a surprise box-office hit.

2016: Obama's America, which suggests the US president will work to reduce his country's influence on world affairs if he is re-elected this winter, has made more than $10.5m (£6.6m) in receipts in seven weeks of release and is gathering momentum. It entered the US box-office top 10 at the weekend in eighth place.

"Just saw 2016. Truly scary if no answer. Every voter should see and decide for self what future they want for America," tweeted Murdoch, who has been a regular user of the microblogging service since the beginning of the year. The Australian-born News Corporation founder, who resigned as a director of News International last month in the wake of the News of the World hacking scandal, is a US citizen and maintains a large business empire in the States including the film studio 20th Century Fox and the TV station Fox News.

2016: Obama's America is directed by conservative author and commentator Dinesh D'Souza, an Indian American who argues that the president's political instincts are anti-American – allegedly due to the influence of his purportedly anti-colonialist Kenyan father Barack Obama Sr. It warns that a second term for the Democratic candidate in November's presidential election could change the country for good and ends with the statement: "The future is in your hands."

Murdoch later continued to show his political leanings with a post praising last night's speech by Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan at the party's national convention in Tampa Florida. "Utterly brilliant speech by Paul Ryan," he tweeted. "Leaders like him needed in many countries today."

New Cronenberg interview - talks about casting Rob, chemistry and more

As Eric, Pattinson is in every scene of the film, portraying a character unlike any he's tackled before. And in our exclusive interview in support of Cosmopolis' theatrical release by eONE Films, writer/director Cronenberg explained why Pattinson was right for the part of Eric and how he went about tackling the adaptation of DeLillo's novel.

In casting Robert Pattinson, it's kind of a double-edge sword, isn't it? You have his Twilight fans anxious to support him in whatever he chooses to do and then you have the people who dismiss him because he is 'that guy from Twilight'.

"Yeah. In a weird way, on the one hand of course I'm completely aware of all of those elements and also of course when you're making a movie that for an independent movie was relatively expensive, you have to have a leading character who is very charismatic and who can carry the weight and has the star quality and so on, because you're going to be looking at him. He's literally in every scene in the movie, and that's pretty unusual. I mean even in Tom Cruise movies, Tom is not in absolutely every scene of the movie - but Rob is. So he has to have that. But at the same time, you want to forget the movies, you know? You want to forget his movies and my movies because we're creating this completely new thing and you don't know what audience you're going to get. You can anticipate it, you can think about it, but really you don't know. So ultimately when you're making the movie you're saying, 'Okay, I'm here with these actors. They're wonderful actors, I cast them because they're terrific and they will bring great stuff to the script,' and then at that point you're just making a movie and you're not thinking about any other movie."

Needing an actor to carry the film by being in every scene, how did you figure out Robert Pattinson was the right guy to play Eric?

[Laughing] "Well, this is the magic of casting! I think as a director, it's part of your job. It's a really important part of your job. I think a lot of people don't even realize that the director's involved in casting. Some people say, 'Did you choose your actors?,' and I say, 'Yes. You're not a director if you don't.'"

"Of course, you're juggling many things, like I say. You're juggling, for example, their passports. This is a Canada / France co-production and we were limited to one American actor. Most people of course don't know that - nor should they. Paul Giamatti is the only American in this movie even though it takes place in New York City. So from that kind of aspect to just finding the right guy...of course he's got to be the right age, there are a lot of things that are just basic. And then after that, though, there are no rules. You as a director just have to intuit that this actor will be able to carry off this role."

"We often talk about chemistry, for example, in movies between actors, let's say. When I was doing A Dangerous Method, Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender - how do I know they have chemistry together because I had never seen them in a movie together? They've never been in one; they've never met each other. I don't see them together until I'm actually directing them, so I have to be this kind of dating master who can anticipate that this couple will be good together. It's a strange kind of thing. So you give yourself credit when it works, and you have to berate yourself when somehow it hasn't worked. That's basically where you're left."

It strikes me with Cosmopolis that the chemistry actually needed to come between you and Robert more so than between Rob and any of his co-stars.

"There's truth in that too. That is the unspoken thing is the chemistry between the director and the actors is the key. And at a certain point I think Rob would...you know, he's a serious actor and he didn't want to be the one who was going to blow this movie. He was kind of thinking, 'Well, I'll be alone in that limo because I won't have one person who is always playing opposite me. It's really a one-man show with a lot of day players coming in.' And I said, 'No, you won't be alone because I'll be there. I'll be with you every moment.' And so that is a real element."

Do you think that you view the character of Eric the same way that author DeLillo did? Or do you think that you two don't necessarily agree on how an audience should look at him?

"I think we actually illuminate things for each other. I've been on the road doing publicity with Don in several countries and I think he was pretty intrigued by seeing what would happen. Because, after all, once you put Rob Pattinson in that role, that's a very specific thing. You've got a particular face and a particular voice and a body, and that's something that the novel can not have. That's one of the things that movies can do that novels can not do, and so it immediately shapes the character in a way that he wasn't shaped in the novel. So, there are differences, I think, but it's not a major split or divergence. It's just really shading and shaping things. It's just really hearing the dialogue spoken, which was something that when I read the novel, I thought, 'Yeah, I really want to hear this spoken by really great actors.' Just doing that immediately changes your reaction to the characters and to the words. So there is a difference, definitely."

Pink's Road To The VMAs: Cocktails, Pyro And Acrobatics

As 'The World's Most Underrated Superstar' prepares to return to the 2012 Video Music Awards, here's a look at her most memorable VMA moments.
By James Montgomery

Some stars use the Video Music Awards as a platform for launching singles, protests or fashion lines. But not But not Pink. She's always viewed the VMAs as a chance to go for broke, to risk life and limb, or, to get totally sh--faced. And, in the process, she's earned her rightful place amongst the show's all-time greats.

She's performed three times, won five awards and racked up just as many memorable moments at the big show. And she'll certainly only add to that legacy at the 2012 Video Music Awards, when she returns to the stage to perform a song off her upcoming The Truth About Love album. So in anticipation of what's sure to be another epic turn, here's a look back at Pink's greatest VMA moments ... safety not guaranteed.

Pink first graced the VMA stage back in 2002, and she certainly made her debut a memorable one. Not only did she take home two moonmen that night — including Best Female Video for "Get the Party Started," where she delivered a party-hearty acceptance speech that included one prominently placed curse word and the declaration "I'm too drunk for this!" — but she wowed the Radio City crowd with a raucous performance of "Just Like a Pill." Decked out in black leather, and backed by a cracking live band, she prowled the stage, sassed her way through lines like "I tried to call the nurse again/but she's being a little bitch" and even flashed the finger. Needless to say, it helped establish her place as one of the baddest girls in the biz, censors be damned.

She returned in 2008 and tore through a performance of "So What" that took over the backstage lot at the Paramount studios, featured some actual stunt work from Pink herself, and plenty of pyro. Beginning from a fire escape above the New York City set, she slid down some fabric (while still hitting all her notes, a feat she'd repeat the following year), smashed a bunch of sh-- up, led an army of extras through some well-placed explosive devices, and ended smack dab in the middle of the stage, while flames licked the sky. She was defiant, brave and, above all else, 100 percent Pink (even if her hair was blonde).

And while both of those performances were standouts, Pink's defining VMA moment occurred in 2009, when she stole the show with her acrobatic take on "Sober." Dangling 60 feet above the Radio City stage, held in place by only a harness, she killed the song (and almost killed herself), nailed a series of high-risk trapeze tumbles, and, in a moment of silence just before the climactic tumble, had every hair in the building standing at attention.

It was a performance that led us to declare her "The World's Most Underrated Superstar," and looking back at it now, perhaps that praise didn't do the whole thing justice. It was also the moment where she carved out her own incredibly unique, daredevil space in the pop-star spectrum, a place none of her contemporaries dare tread. Can she top it in 2012? We can't wait to find out ... and here's hoping she brings a helmet.

Which Pink performance has been her craziest? Let us know in the comments!
