Countdown to 7 Billion: Should World Adopt 'One-Child' Policy? (LiveScience.com)

LiveScience.com - The world population is projected to hit a whopping 7 billion by the end of this month, and researchers suggest it could reach 10 billion within the next century. On the one hand, this means we're a great success — after all, the goal of any species is to expand and conquer. But, on the other hand, all that expansion means more mouths to feed, which requires more space and energy, which increases the demand on resources and the environment, perhaps too large a demand for Earth to support.

Take a Walk With Warhol: Celebrate the Pop Icon's Birthday With a Tour of His Favorite New York City Haunts (ARTINFO)

ARTINFO - Andy Warhol moved to New Yorkfrom his native Pittsburghin 1949 and before long became one of the Big Apple?s most iconic citizens, advertising the city?s grittily experimental sensibility to the world throughworks like "Empire" and "Chelsea Girls." He was also head over heels in lovewith New York, and now it?s possible to view the city through his eyes ? justin time for what would have been his 83rd birthday, on August 6 ? with"Andy Warhol's New York City: Four Walks Uptown to Downtown," a newbook by Thomas Kiedrowski that traces the artist footsteps across 80 sites hedoted on. Some are no longer inexistence (others are never-realized), but most are still around ?  meaning that you can pretend to be part ofthe Factory gang, meandering around Manhattan with Andy to lunch at the Odeonin Tribeca, shop at Bloomingdale's, and attend openings at the Upper EastSide's Leo Castelli gallery. The beginnings of the book came about when friends askedKiedrowski what he wanted to do during his first visit to New York. Unlike most tourists, he didn'twant to check out Times Square or see theStatue of Liberty. Instead, he pulled out a piece of paper containing a list ofaddresses of buildings having to do with the Pop artist: the Silver Factory on East 47th Street, the White Factory at Union Square, and the townhouse on the Upper East Side whereWarhol lived with his mother. Kiedrowski eventually moved to NewYork, continuing to map out Andy's New York, and making a career out of hisobsession by offering tours to Warhol sites in the city.

Saudi heir's death brings conservative to fore (AP)

Saudis watch a TV broadcast on the death of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011. Prince Sultan died abroad Saturday after an illness, state TV said. Sultan, who was the kingdom's deputy prime minister and the minister of defense and aviation, has had a string of health issues. He underwent surgery in New York in February 2009 for an undisclosed illness and spent nearly a year abroad recuperating in the United States and at a palace in Agadir, Morocco. (AP Photo/Hassan Ammar)AP - Saudi Arabia's ruling monarchy moved into a critical period of realignment Saturday after the death of the heir to the throne opened the way for a new crown prince: most likely a tough-talking interior minister who has led crackdowns on Islamic militants but also has shown favor to ultraconservative traditions such as keeping the ban on women voting.

House Democrats say GOP wants too many days off (AP)

AP - The House will be in session less than one out of every three days next year, a slight decline from past years. House Republicans say they are running the place more efficiently and lawmakers need the time to be with constituents in an election year. Democrats say that's too few days on the job during an economic crisis.

Could a lawsuit derail Android? Understanding Oracle's threat to Google (Digital Trends)

Digital Trends - The major patent and copyright infringement case between Google and Oracle over technology included in Android looks like it may be going to trial, just not anytime soon. Judge William Alsup issued his preliminary trial plan to both sides Wednesday, noting that the trial is not going to get started in 2011—and everyone involved had better get prepared for a long-drawn out proceeding rather than a quick summary trial. Judge Alsup outlined plans for a three-phase jury trial—phase one to cover copyright claims, phase two to cover patent claims, and a third phase for all remaining issues. The judge noted that the court needs lead time for prepare, and that includes jury selection and preparation for the lengthy disruptions jurors can expect to face. And still, no trial date has been set.
