Robert Pattinson's Devoted Fans Wait for Days Outside 'Cosmopolis' Premiere

(Bauer Griffin) Robert Pattinson got a hero's welcome when he returned to the red carpet at New York City's MoMA on Monday evening. Dedicated fans — all of them female — lined both sides of 53rd street in anticipation of a special screening of Cosmopolis, Pattinson's upcoming David Cronenberg film. Many of the spectators clutched photographs of the beloved Twilight star, while others went the full distance with elaborate printed posters emblazoned with the star's face. All were giddy at the prospect of cheering for the British actor, who has kept out of the spotlight since pictures of his longtime girlfriend Kristen Stewart embracing married director Rupert Sanders went public a few weeks ago.

I visited the front lines at about 5:30 p.m., a couple of hours before Pattinson arrived in a dapper blue suit. Police had already confined the well-behaved crowd behind metal barricades hours earlier, giving television crews the perfect setup to conduct in-line interviews. When I asked one particularly ardent Rob fan for a quick interview, she shook her head: "I've given, like, three already!"

A young Long Island fan named Katie helpfully offered, explaining that she'd only been in line since noon, but that others had parked there as early as Saturday. She, like many of the other fans, had learned about Pattinson's appearance through Twitter. "Rob fans are very passionate, very supportive," she gushed.

Asked how she felt about the unfortunately timed cheating scandal, Katie insisted that she's still a Kristen Stewart fan. "We love them both, so we were completely shocked, but—"

A friend, also about 15, interrupted, faithful to Rob through and through. "But no, they're human like us, so you just gotta respect their business, no matter if they're famous or not. It's their personal life, and you just gotta back off, you know? The media is like, way too crazy over it, it's like, blown up. It's like, just chill."

"He was always like a private person, he never confirmed that he was dating Kristen, and so I feel like he's going to continue to not comment on it," Katie offered. Her friend piped up again: "He doesn't owe us anything. We don't expect him to give any info about his private life."

Despite their obvious devotion, neither Katie nor her friend was sure when they'd have the chance to see Cosmopolis, though not for lack of wanting.

"Well, it's rated R, so we might have to deal with our parents," Katie sighed.
