Runner Runner – review

Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake fail to enliven this undemanding, forgettable mob thriller

After the Oscar-winning exertions of Argo and the artful musings of To the Wonder, Ben Affleck decides to kick back and relax with this rent-paying excursion into lovable criminal territory. He plays Ivan Block, owner of a huge Costa Rica-based online gambling empire into which Justin Timberlake's cash-strapped Princeton student is lured. Despite all the blather about internet gambling being the new American Dream, this remains stodgy, by-numbers fare, the contemporary subject matter hiding a nothing-new tale of a young gun on the rise, courting the mob boss, flirting with his moll (Gemma Arterton, underused) and inevitably coming unstuck. Take a gamble on it and odds are you'll have forgotten most of the film before the end credits finish rolling.
