The Stone Temple Pilots have parted ways with frontman — and founding member — Scott Weiland, making the announcement Wednesday (February 27) via a statement that may have set new industry standards for brevity.

"Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland," was the entire sum of an email sent by their publicist, though, when reached for comment by MTV News, their rep said that more information about the split would be coming "soon."

News of drama within the band began to spread late last year, after Slash — who played with Weiland in Velvet Revolver — told a Minneapolis radio station that Weiland had been "fired from STP." That was in response to Weiland's claims that he was "completely open" to reuniting with Velvet Revolver, who burned brightly before imploding in 2008.

Until Wednesday, there had been no word from Weiland or Stone Temple Pilots about a split. Of course, the band had never been strangers to drama; after establishing themselves as one of the biggest bands of the 1990s with hits like "Plush," "Interstate Love Song" and "Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart," they parted ways after several reports of in-fighting between Weiland and the DeLeo brothers, Dean and Robert.

In 2008, the band ended a five year hiatus with a triumphant tour, and two years later, would release their first new album in nine years, a self-titled effort that sent them back on the road. There had been little developments about a follow-up album in the time since, and Weiland had for a solo tour, where he promised to play songs from STP's first two albums, Core and Purple.

A rep for Scott Weiland could not be reached for comment by MTV News at press time.
