Mrs Brown's Boys: D'Movie trailer: a film of 'the worst sitcom ever made'

Brendon O'Carroll's bolshy mam is heading to the big screen. She could just be the new face of avant-garde British cinema, says Xan Brooks

Here's one in the eye for anyone bemoaning the conservative state of modern British cinema. This summer's big homegrown smash looks set to be an avant-garde working-class comedy, implicitly touching on the Irish diaspora, in which the characters break the fourth wall with abandon and the heroine is a gender-bending revolutionary, a bit like Cate Blanchett in that film about Bob Dylan. So naturally we're excited. The fact that the movie has a UK release date of June 27 also raises the tantalising prospect of a berth in competition at this year's Cannes film festival.

Or possibly not - because the picture in question is Mrs Brown's Boys: D'Movie, the feature-length spin-off from what some excitable critics have described as the worst sitcom ever made. On this occasion, it seems, Mrs Brown (Brendan O'Carroll) has her work cut out protecting her fruit-and-veg stall from evil Russian gangsters and casual browsers alike. "Tom, if you're not buying, feck off," snaps Mrs Brown to the cackling delight of a fellow market trader. Mrs Brown, praise be, has lost none of her moxy in her move to "D'Big screen".
