'Jessie' actress also inspired by fellow Disney starlet Demi Lovato: 'She is one of the best vocalists of our generation, hands down.'

She's already become one of the Disney Channel's biggest stars with her hit show "Jessie," but Debby Ryan isn't going to stop there. She is now chasing another dream: to release an album.
While filming the second season of her series, the 19-year-old fashion lover has been hard at work on her upcoming debut.
"I have all of these songs I've written over the course of some time, especially in the last month," Ryan told MTV News. "I'm putting together in my home studio. My brother is an amazing producer, one of my best friends is an incredible songwriter and really liked my lyrics, and we worked together and ended up writing about 12 songs now for the record, and I think it's going to come out the end of the summer, which I'm excited about."
The album might not be what you would expect from a Disney starlet, because Ryan is taking her inspiration from a wide array of artists to come up with a sound that is all her own.
"If Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and the Lumineers, and Mumford & Sons, and April Smith and the Great Picture Show, and the Hush Sound, and Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry and Tom Petty all had a baby in a carnival in the Old West, that's what the record will sound like," she explained.
While Ryan's fans will have to wait a few months to find out exactly what that will sound like, she revealed that the similarities to Swift involve the vulnerability in her songwriting, while the correlation to Perry is all about the fun.
"Katy Perry, it's fun and aspirational," Ryan said. "It's OK to get lost in youth and the fun elements of being a teenager and being a person who wants to just tell stories and fall in love and try things and be stupid and be smart. At the end of the day, not wreck your life, but also not draw yourself into a box."
Plenty of Disney stars have crossed over into the music industry, but Ryan has been keeping a close eye on Demi Lovato. Ryan said she admires Lovato for always being relatable to her fans, and she hopes to do the same with her own music.
"I think Demi Lovato has an absolutely incredible sense of self and always did, from rock and roll to R&B, and now she's pop, pop, pop. And she is an incredible vocalist; she is one of the best vocalists of our generation, hands down," Ryan said. "And so, for her to be able to go out and say, 'Hey, these are my struggles,' and before that, 'This is what I think is cool; this is what's hard,' and had just been candid the entire time, and I think that that's a really cool thing. She balances music that the 13-year-olds and people that used to watch "Sonny [With a Chance]" like with things that adults jam to and cry to."
