Looper
Few things are as divisive as time-travel tales but, really, unless you have travelled from the future (or past), you've no right to say what could or couldn't happen. The best you can hope for is a movie that sets out some rules, sticks to them as closely as possible and shows you something new in the process.
Looper does all this; it also has Shane Carruth, director of the bafflingly complex Primer, on board as adviser. If anyone would know about this sort of thing it's him. It's not just the theoretical stuff that director Rian Johnson does well here, he also gives us a movie that earns its moments of action and emotion, which is pretty rare in itself. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is paid to assassinate people sent back from the future but ends up having to hunt down the future version of himself (played by Bruce Willis), who's come back in time to trace and kill the younger version of the criminal mastermind who will try to kill him in the future. Does that make sense? Well, it does in the movie. Gordon-Levitt, with a subtle and impressive makeup job, and Willis make a great job of showing the same person with decades of experience between them; the older incarnation clearly detests his cockier younger self. Both are great, with Willis in particular – who seems to be attracted by script quality rather than the pay cheque – turning in his best performance since Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys.
