The first look at actual footage from Cosmopolis has arrived online in the form of a quick international trailer clocking in at just thirty-four seconds. In that time, the trailer covers plenty of not-safe-for-work ground in frenetic fashion. Over a career that has seen the likes of The Fly, Crash (the 1996 one), and A History of Violence, director David Cronenberg has established a fascination with sex and splattery, horrifically abrupt violence. The teaser trailer below debuted at the ever-reliable Twitch, and this post is legally required to mention that this is a far cry from Twilight for Robert Pattinson. Rather than attempting to brand himself as an action star as his signature franchise closes this year with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Pattinson is certainly taking a risk with Cosmopolis. Hats off.
Again, the trailer contains glimpses of nudity and violence, and as such is NSFW.
Based on the novel by Don DeLillo, Cosmopolis follows a young millionaire who sets out in a limo to get a haircut on a day when he's made some big financial moves, leading to a strange daylong journey through Manhattan. Cronenberg adapted the novel into screenplay form, and from the looks of this teaser, he's going all-out. If it must be spelled out, the director of Scanners and Dead Ringers going all-out is an exceptionally good thing.
Pattinson carries the film, but the supporting cast is an eclectic group that includes Jay Baruchel, Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amalric, Kevin Durand, and Sarah Gadon.
Cosmopolis doesn't yet have a domestic distributor, but with Cronenberg and Pattinson, it'll definitely get a limited release at least.
