Directors Guild of America overlooks trio for directorial achievement prize, traditionally regarded as Oscars bellwether
The 2013 Oscar hopes of film-makers such as Quentin Tarantino, David O Russell and Paul Thomas Anderson have suffered a setback after they were snubbed by the influential Directors Guild of America awards.
Announcing its nominations for directorial achievement in film-making over the past year, the guild named Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Tom Hooper (Les Miserables), Ben Affleck (Argo) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi) as its nominees for 2013. The organisation's annual rundown is seen as one of the most reliable indicators of Oscar success because many of its members also vote for the best director prize at the Academy awards. In both 2011 and 2012, four out of the guild's five nominees subsequently found themselves in the frame for the equivalent Oscar.
The news means that Tarantino may not receive an Oscar nod for his acclaimed but controversial spaghetti western homage Django Unchained, while Russell could miss out for romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook, and Anderson may be out of luck for period drama The Master. Other directors whose hopes of an Academy award nomination look to have been dashed include Moonrise Kingdom's Wes Anderson and Amour's Michael Haneke.
Affleck aside, the nominated directors have all previously been put forward for the top prize. Last year, the guild honoured The Artist's Michel Hazanavicus with its top prize, while in 2011 the gong went to Tom Hooper for The King's Speech. Both men went on to win the Academy award. This year's ceremony will be held on 2 February; the Oscars follow on 24 February.
At the other end of the quality spectrum, the final instalment of The Twilight Saga was today revealed as the big winner (or should that be loser?) at the annual Razzie awards for the worst movies of the past year. Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has 11 nominations in 10 categories, including worst film and worst sequel. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, the stars of the long-running vampire romance franchise, will vie for the worst screen couple honour, while Bill Condon is up for worst director. Critical turkey Battleship has seven nominations, and there was also predictable recognition for regular Razzie winner Adam Sandler. His comedy That's My Boy, described as a "strict no-fun zone" by the Guardian's John Patterson, got eight nominations.
