Kanye West Is Steve Jobs, 'Pac, 'The Nucleus': See EVERYTHING He Calls Himself Here!

MTV News gathers all the names he compares himself to in the BBC interviews.

Kanye West has spent much of 2013 reinventing himself as a minimalist, though, as he proved in his recent interview with BBC Radio's Zane Lowe — and subsequent spat with Jimmy Kimmel — he's still capable of going to the max.

If anything, West has only added to his legacy of largesse this year, at least when it comes to outrageous, over-the-top boasts (or "Ye-isms") and eye-opening analogies. Whether he was launching into onstage tirades, speaking to The New York Times, or rapping on record, Kanye has dropped more bon mots than we can even count ... though we're going to try.

Inspired by his latest, and perhaps greatest interview, we've compiled a list of everything (and everyone) Kanye has compared himself to in 2013. It's probably not comprehensive — keeping up with his ego requires a full-time staff — but it's pretty close. Looking over this list, one thing's for certain: though his music may be stripped down, Kanye the man still contains multitudes.

Three Stooges film discovered in garden shed

Comedy legends' missing 1933 film restored after negative found by Australian collector

A Three Stooges short previously thought lost in a 1967 fire has just received its first screening since being rediscovered in a garden shed in Australia.

Hello, Pop!, a 17-minute short made for MGM in 1933 featuring the Stooges alongside their creator, Ted Healy, was the only Three Stooges film thought not to have survived, after MGM's negative was destroyed in a vault fire in 1967 that also consumed the only known copy of Tod Browning's silent shocker London After Midnight. However, 78-year-old film collector Malcolm Smith came across a 35mm nitrate negative of the film in his shed in a Sydney suburb while sorting through his collection for disposal. Smith then contacted the Vitaphone Project, an archive and preservation organisation in the US, in December last year, and they took on the job of restoring it.

The Three Stooges were originally created by Healy as part of his vaudeville act, with Moe Howard hired as his first "stooge" – ie, fake audience member invited up on stage – in 1922. Shemp Howard, Moe's brother, was added in 1923, and Larry Fine became the third stooge in 1925. The quartet had immediate success on Broadway, and made the feature-length comedy Soup to Nuts in 1930. Shemp left in 1932, and was replaced by his brother Curly; and despite long-running contract disputes between Healy and the Stooges, they signed up together for a series of five MGM shorts. Hello, Pop! features Healy as a musicals producer attempting to stage an elaborate show, but whose efforts are constantly interrupted by visitors, the Stooges among them.

Hello, Pop! screens tonight at the Film Forum in New York.

Hannah Arendt – review

Barbara Sukowa excels as the eponymous writer-philosopher covering the Adolf Eichmann trial in the 60s

Reading on mobile? Watch the trailer here

The banality of evil is examined in this solid and intelligent account of Arendt's controversial conclusions on the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Deftly blending low-key drama with archival black-and-white footage of the Nazi's cross-examination, director Margarethe von Trotta raises thorny questions about complicity and guilt, conclusions which caused outrage when first aired in the pages of the New Yorker. Award-winner Barbara Sukowa is excellently measured in the title role.

Rating: 3/5

Gay discrimination in entertainment industry has not gone away, finds survey

A wide-ranging study by the Screen Actors Guild suggests that homophobic comments are common, and other forms of job discrimination are still prevalent

A survey by the Screen Actors' Guild has concluded that significant discrimination against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) performers persists in the entertainment industry. A third of respondents felt that the entertainment industry was biased against LGBT performers, while on-set prejudice appears to be rife: over half the LGB actors who responded said they had heard directors and actors make "anti-gay comments".

Conducted by the SAG-AFTRA union, which represents some 160,000 film and TV actors, with the Williams Institute (UCLA's centre for sexual orientation law), the survey analysed the views of some 5900 respondents, 85% of whom identified themselves as straight/heterosexual.

In general terms, the feeling that there was bias was not limited to LGBT performers alone: 34% of non-LGBT respondents said they considered this to be true, as against 53% of LGBT. A third of LGBT performers also said they had witnessed "disrespectful treatment" that had been noticed by non-LGBT performers.

In terms of actual job discrimination, nine per cent of lesbian or gay respondents said they had been turned down for a job because of their sexual orientation, while earnings by LGB actors were lower as a daily average than their heterosexual counterparts despite, according to SAG's analysis, their getting similar types of roles.

Most intriguing, perhaps, are the statistics around "marketability". While there was a common assumption among the actors themselves that LGB actors are marketable in straight roles, 45% of LG respondents "strongly believed that producers and studio executives think LG performers are less marketable; however, only 15% of heterosexual respondents felt the same.

The best news, perhaps, to come out of the survey was that 72% of LG actors who were out said it had no effect on their careers; though playing a gay role appeared to affect things for LGB actors more than heterosexuals, as a quarter said it had an impact on their later work.

Rob in Glamour Italy - New Interview (Audio + Transcript) + Picture

ETA: Added the scans of the interview at the bottom of the picture. A "newish" #DiorRob promo picture in better quality

New Picture (it's the picture from Madame Le Figaro, but bigger)

Transcript - in English - Full scans at the bottom of the post (interview in Italian)

"Do you mind if I chew a piece of gum during the interview?". First info: Robert Pattinson is a polite Hollywood star. Twilight, the vampire saga that made him famous, yielded him a popularity second only to the post-Titanic "DiCaprio-mania". However, Robert remained a 27 year old down-to-earth guy who asks for permission.

And who quickly changes his mind: "Actually, I'm going to spit it: this is disgusting!". He waits for a hint of approval, then rips the corner of a newspaper, wraps in the "gross piece of gum", and smiles, while hiding the "misdeed" with his hands. Second info: Rob, as his friends call him, with his flipped back baseball cap and his three days' stubble , is also funny.

"Do you want to try an Italian one?", I ask him. "Really? Thank you!". He delicately takes the package. While opening it, with his half British half American accent, he reads: "Denti bianchi, sorriso protetto (i.e.: white teeth, protected smile)". He hasn't got a single word, but looks enthusiastic. He tries one, then reclines his head, so all that one can see is his thick eyebrows, and, right below, two blue slits. He whispers: "Yours are much better".

Third info: Pattinson could win anyone over with just one look.

Or even one smile: it happens in the adv for the Dior Homme cologne, of which he recently became spokesperson, taking over Jude Law's role. The commercial begins and, for the first 20 seconds, Robert is serious, thoughtful, intense. Then Camille Rowe, his partner on set, pretends to kiss him, while in fact attempts to bite his lips. That comes unexpected: he smiles, and the public melts. Every woman, no matter her age, secretly wishes to be in the shoes of the only creature who is able to light up the handsome, gloomy guy.

Robert did have such a muse in real life: it was Kristen Stewart, his Twilight co-star. The girl who cheated on him with a filmmaker, then tried everything possible to get back with him, succeeded for a while, but failed in the end. They broke up last May. And, since then, he's looking ahead.

What did the Dior campaign mean for you?
A turning point: for the first time, staring at myself in the screen, I realized I looked like an adult. It was so relieving: I've always been afraid to resemble a 15 year old. In Cosmopolis, for instance, I was wearing a black suit. Pretty manly. Still, I felt like a little boy dressed up as a grown-up.

Well, dressed up or not, you're often indicated as the most glamorous celeb.
What? I'm so boring: I wear the same clothes every day. This Dior jacket, for example: they gave it to me months ago, and I haven't took it off yet. If I could, I'd wear it to go to sleep.

Maybe you should send it to the dry cleaners... What about women instead: what should a girl wear to get your attention?
Hum I'm trying hard not to come up with dirty comments (he laughs). Let's put it this way: whatever she chooses, she needs to own it, and to show she's comfortable in her skin and clothes.

Are you comfortable in your own skin?
I'm not exactly a self-confident person. But right now I feel good: I left Twilight behind, and, with that, my adolescence. I'm now ready to move into the next phase.

What will it be in the new phase?
I see little but thoroughly: no many roles interest me.

Which kind of part looks appealing to you?
Well, all my characters have a dark side. Whereas I'm not dark at all. In general: when I read a script, if I think I'm not good enough to interpret the role, I accept it. I like the challenge.

The next one?
I'm working on Maps to the Stars by David Cronenberg, a movie about how crazy and neurotics actors are, and on THold on to Me by James Marsh, wherein I'll be a drug dealer. It'll be hard - I've never done it before.

Never dealt drugs, you mean?
Not recently (he laughs). I was trying to say that, in real life, I've never been particularly scary. I'll have to learn how to become shady and dangerous.

You imitate others for work but, when you wake up in the morning, do you know who you are?
Please: I often don't even know where I am! Seriously, though, I've never known it for sure, not even before I started acting.

Maybe you began to find it out.
Could be. Playing different roles opens up your mind, about others, but especially about yourself.

You speak about acting as it were a sort of psychoanalysis.
Indeed, it's extremely therapeutic. The ability to break down barriers, to overcome insecurities on set is something very powerful, and empowering; especially for an introverted like me. But I think the same holds true for all actors. I haven't met a single one who is self-confident. We're a bunch of psychopaths.

Have you ever seen a therapist for real?
No, but I'd like to become one. For now I analyze my friends. I like to investigate their subconscious. Or maybe, I simply enjoy minding their business.

Do you have many friends?
In London, where I was born and raised, I have four best friends for life. I'm a lucky guy: four is more than what people normally have. Here in L.A., however, it's harder to gather a little group: people come and go. Plus, we're all actors. I swear, it's crazy: every person you meet is a fucking actor who, by default, is competing with you.

Is there any one whom you hold in high esteem?
My absolute favorite is Jack Nicholson. I used to be obsessed with him: when I was younger I tried to imitate the way he dressed, the way he talked... I also like Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Shannon a lot. And then there's Channing Tatum, who is often undervalued, even though I think he's as good as Marlon Brando.

What about you: have you ever felt undervalued?
Yeah, critics don't appreciate extremely commercial roles. I understand that. But for a while I was fucking scared I would have remained a vampire forever.

That didn't happen.
True: fortunately, I started getting more articulated roles, like my characters in Cosmopolis and in The Rover. And even this occasion that Dior gave me was a privilege: I learnt another way of acting.

What would you have done if you hadn't become an actor?
I would have gone to college to study International Relations, and then I probably would have tried a political career. Even now, I don't completely rule this out.

Which party would you consider getting affiliated with?
I'm a free bird, I'd rather be a dictator (he laughs). I told you I'm weird...

And which laws would you establish in your kingdom?
No one can live here, but me.

Were you born solitary?
I became so. Los Angeles is inherently solitary. Look at the streets: you won't see a community, but a bunch of individuals, each one locked up in his own car. At the beginning I felt a bit lonely, then I got used to it. I actually like it now.

Did you get used to fame as well?
I had to. Until a while ago, I stubbornly tried to live the same life as before. It went poorly: I couldn't go anywhere without being assaulted by a giant amount of fans, so I went nowhere. I was living in a bubble. Then something clicked, and I said to myself: "You have to accept that everything is different now". And I felt relieved, almost immediately. Acceptation is the prerequisite for happiness, or anyway that's what I like to think.

Are you happy?
I accepted, many things. And now I almost feel weird admitting it - because if you say it, then the moment may vanish quickly. But yes, I am happy now.

Roman Polanski and the sin of simplification | Victoria Coren Mitchell

The Samantha Geimer/Roman Polanski case demonstrates our terrible dread of nuance

Samantha Geimer, the girl in the Roman Polanski rape case, has published what might be the most important and valuable book of the century so far.

It may prove to be one of those books that a lot of people talk about without actually reading, like A Brief History of Time, or The Tipping Point, or most of the school syllabus.

But that's OK. The value of Geimer's book, The Girl, lies in the debate it stirs up; this is already happening through serialisation and widespread, articulate interviews with the author. If that triggers a bigger discussion among non-readers, then she has still done something useful and important.

How much do you know about the story? I knew a bit, but still experienced what hurried book reviewers call "an emotional rollercoaster" while reading one of her interviews.

When Samantha Geimer was 13, the famous 43-year-old film director Roman Polanski said that he was photographing young American girls for a feature in French Vogue. With forgivable naivety, Geimer's mother allowed him to take her out alone. He photographed her topless, which she did not tell her mother.

A few weeks later, Polanski took Samantha to Jack Nicholson's house, gave her several glasses of champagne and part of a sleeping pill, then had sex with her. It was statutory rape. Geimer says: "It was rape in every sense of the word. I said no."

The way in which he had sex with her is indelicate to include, but important. Geimer's book expresses it with literate sarcasm: referring to a sympathetic psychological report after Polanski's arrest, which cited his "solicitude concerning pregnancy" as a mitigating factor, Geimer says this was "an interesting new euphemism for sodomy".

I don't know how this makes you feel. It fills me with thoughts of violence. I imagine being alone with Polanski, kicking and punching him. The anger I feel, at the thought of this being done to a drugged child, seems to be an instinctively brutal one.

Then you read about the life of Roman Polanski. How shameful and how pointless to punish him with violence, even in the imagination.

Aged six, he saw his father taken to a concentration camp. His mother died at Auschwitz when she was four months pregnant. At 35, with God knows what ineradicable scars, Polanski married Sharon Tate and they started a family immediately. Tate was eight months pregnant when a gang broke into their home, stabbed her to death and smeared "pig" on the front door in her blood.

This is not an excuse; other survivors have not become rapists. But it silences my violent instinct immediately and creates a sharp and terrible sympathy in parallel with the anger. A second complicating factor is that Polanski's work is filled with beauty and humanity.

These are unfamiliar feelings; our modern world does not invite us to treat anybody as nuanced. People are heroes or villains, victims or victimisers; sometimes neither, but never both.

When Roman Polanski, who has lived in exile from America and its justice system for decades, was nominated for an Oscar for directing The Pianist, Samantha Geimer called on the Academy to "judge the movie, not the man".

She has been exchanging emails with Polanski for several years.

She says that the police investigation, hospital exams and reporting of the case were more traumatic than the attack itself. She says: "I did something wrong, I was stupid… To pose topless, and to drink and to take the [sleeping] pill."

It is so easy and tempting to knock this into a pigeonhole: the misguided self-blame and denial of the victim. But this woman is too smart and articulate for us comfortably to assume we know better. She puts these complicated thoughts out there, alongside her anger, not because she's too damaged to think clearly but because she can't bear the world's oversimplification.

When a therapist on the Oprah Winfrey show explained that Geimer was suffering from "victim's guilt", she said this was "patronising"; who would dare patronise her further by saying that it wasn't?

In The Pianist, Polanski transformed his ghastly knowledge of the camps into an act of artistic self-expression. In The Girl, Geimer does the same with her rape. That is a powerful response, from both of them. But what an incredibly complicated common bond.

It is the complication that we need. People have become desperate to reduce everything, including each other, to mindless categories of good and bad, as if the world can be divided into Facebook likes and dislikes.

When I wrote about the Muslim women in Birmingham who were protesting against a ban on the niqab, and the argument that they are so deeply in the patriarchal grip that they cannot choose as freely as they think, I pointed out that people have said the same to me about taking my husband's name. Many readers asked why I was defending the veil. Others pointed out the differences between veiling your face and changing your name. It was as though there is no room for analogy unless it's a direct comparison and no room for words on the niqab other than "Hurray for it" or "Ban it".

Similarly, we yearn to know if we should be cheering or booing at Operation Yewtree, political leaders or the idea of bombing Syria.

So what is to be done with Samantha Geimer's story? She does not condemn Polanski nor exonerate him. She does not blame herself nor refuse to examine herself. Her voice is strong and complicated. You cannot simplify her, or him.

Her current battle is not with her original oppressor but the reporters of then and now, the lawyers, the psychologists of reality TV and everyone watching – all of whom objectified her further. She is fighting against reductive simplicity. She forces us to think hard, to use muscles that must not go slack.
