The biggest news in movies this week was the announcement that J.J. Abrams will direct "Star Wars: Episode VII." No matter where your cinematic loyalties lie, it is a pretty big deal, given the franchise's legacy, passionate fanbase and moneymaking potential.
Here at MTV News, we've been taking our time getting used to the idea. We pondered a few burning questions and consulted "Star Wars" experts for their reactions, but we haven't yet finished analyzing the big picture (pun intended).
As you'll see from the opinions of the MTV staffers below, there is not one cohesive yay or nay in support of Abrams directing "Episode VII," but we might get there eventually. Or not.
Super Psyched!
As a self-proclaimed "Star Wars" geek and an "anything J.J. Abrams" admirer, I feel like I've won the lottery. I wasn't alive to see the original trilogy in theaters, which I don't think I'll ever get over, but I can only imagine it would have given me a feeling much like this one. J.J. has already cemented himself as a great sci-fi storyteller, and this will only add to his stellar résumé. He's going to be able to please the hard-core fanboys and new viewers alike, and I can't wait to see what his insight brings to the "Star Wars" table. See you in line. — Geoff McCarthy
Fine. Just fine.
Listen, there's been so much speculation and theorizing and hypotheticals about the new "Star Wars" trilogy in the last few months that I've become more or less numb to it all. But since an already tight-lipped Disney hired the most secretive director working today, those conspiracy theories are all we'll have for the foreseeable future, so I'm perfectly OK with waiting until we know actual facts before forming an actual opinion. This is all I know: Abrams makes movies that look good. He can direct spectacular sequences, and I'm seeing "Episode VII" no matter what, so for now, I wait. — Kevin Sullivan
Heck Yeah!
My fantasy choice to direct "Episode VII" was Joss Whedon, but of course he's unavailable. J.J. Abrams is a fine alternative, though. He's a true fan, so you know he's going to do his best to honor the legacy of Lucas. And if he can do for "Star Wars" what he did for "Star Trek," we have absolutely nothing to worry about. 2015 is going to be a very good year for movies and movie lovers. — Tami Katzoff
Weirded Out
Come on. The same guy gets to direct "Star Trek" and "Star Wars"? That's just unfair! It's a weird development from the perspective of "Trek" and "Wars" fans, long thought to be at odds with one another but now forced to accept a reality wherein Abrams is at the helm of both franchises. That oddness aside, I am perfectly happy with the choice. Abrams has many skills, but one of his greatest is his ability to emulate his role models. "Super 8," whether you liked it or not, felt exactly like an early Spielberg movie. In that same way, I expect Abrams' "Star Wars" to feel like vintage "Star Wars." The wheel does not need to be reinvented here; it needs to be revisited in its original, near-perfect form ... and that's exactly what Abrams is going to do. — Josh Wigler

Opening up a can of worms here, but I am neither a "Star Wars" nor "Star Trek" fan. Do I appreciate and respect both franchises? Definitely! But they are not the be-all-end-all entertainment properties for me. That being said, I really enjoyed Abrams' first "Star Trek" film and loved "Super 8." The man knows how to make good movies while walking on the eggshells that are the too-high expectations of passionate fans, so I think he'll be fine. And as my friend Meredith Woerner pointed out on Twitter, Abrams' hiring could be very good news for the potential of a smart and complex female protagonist. But more importantly! J.J., who are you going to hire to compose the score?! I am dreaming of a John Williams/ Michael Giacchino blend. —
