Two weeks after he was arrested for drug possession during a police raid at Justin Bieber's Calabasas home, Lil Za has been charged with three felonies, according to reports.

The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office charged the 19-year-old born Xavier Smith with two charges of possession of a controlled substance, for MDMA (a form of ecstasy) and Oxycodone, according to TMZ. Police found the drugs "in plain view" at Bieber's home on January 14, where they were searching for evidence in the alleged egging of a neighbor's home.

Smith also reportedly faces a felony charge for damaging a jail phone. He spent less than a day at the Lost Hills/ Malibu Sheriff's Station. Before he was released on bail, Sheriff's officers confirmed to MTV News that the 19-year-old damaged a phone, resulting in an additional charge and another $50,000 added to his bail.

After being released, Lil Za took to Twitter to clarify what he said was an unfair representation in the media. "Honestly , the media is making me someone I'm not . But only those in my shoes can relate. ... These ppl get paid to make you look bad," he wrote on January 16. "Some stuff I've done has been wrong yes. but look at the position I'm in and the color of my skin. Cocaine? Really?"

He has since deleted his Twitter account.

At a press conference earlier this month, police confirmed that Bieber was "not connected" to the substance found in his residence. "He was not arrested, nor exonerated at this time," said Lieutenant Dave Thompson, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

According to TMZ, he could face up to nine years in prison.

The L.A. County District Attorney's office had yet to respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time.

Scott and Mason Disick: Father-Son Adventure To Barneys

Getting in some quality time with his little guy Mason Disick, Scott Disick ran a few errands in Beverly Hills on Friday (January 31).

The father-of-two sported a green shirt and light washed jeans as he and his adorable son dropped by Barneys New York clothing store.

Meanwhile, Scott's girlfriend and mother of Mason Kourtney is facing some serious drama as the Kardashian family slam step-mother Ellen in deposition over the late Robert Kardashian's diaries.

Earlier this month, Kourtney's sisters Kim and Khloe Kardashian reportedly called Ellen a "slippery snake" and refused to hold back when it came to their negative opinion of Robert's widow during the proceedings.

"Yeah, I dislike her," Kim stated. "I think that she - I don't agree with her decisions as of late. And I didn't agree with her decisions when she wouldn't give us back property or ever since she married my father, I haven't agreed with her decisions.

Miss Kardashian continued, "More recently, after she sold the diaries. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt when they got married, thinking, like, okay, she’s trying to push us out, she got married, you know, she has an agenda."

I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she was grieving and have a hard time, but her actions proved otherwise," she added.

The family of Ellen's late husband is suing her for $500,000 in damages and also claims she sold their belongings to a number of magazine publishers after Robert's death.

Lil Bub, Grumpy Cat Offer Condolences After Passing Of Colonel Meow

Bub remembers the 'kind' cat behind Colonel Meow's 'intimidating facade.'
By Brenna Ehrlich

This week draws to a solemn close following the news that one of the Internet's most illustrious cats, Colonel Meow, has passed away. MTV News reached out to comrades in arms Lil Bub, Grumpy Cat and Keyboard Cat for their thoughts on the great cat's transition to the spirit realm.

Lil Bub wrote in an email to News:

Dear Colonel,

You are without question the most remarkable, impressive, and regal living creature I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Despite your intimidating facade, you were an incredibly kind and loving creature that brought millions of humans great joy. Your legacy will never be forgotten Colonel. See you in space my dear friend.

lub,

BUB

Grumpy Cat also weighed in:

Yesterday was one of the grumpiest days ever. Losing a friend in the Internet cat community is hard. Colonel Meow and I bonded last winter when we met at the Friskies holiday event.

We hung together on the couch backstage and scowled at everyone taking pictures. Colonel Meow had a special sort of evil in him that can never be replaced, and will never be forgotten.

Finally, Keyboard Cat said a few words:

Keyboard Cat and associates would like to offer our deepest sympathy for Colonel Meow and his family. His beautiful face, and fur, and spirit will live on in our hearts and on the internet forever.

The Colonel and his family are epic role models for all living things. Compassion, love, care, smiles (and frowns). You have truly made this a better place for people and cats. We love you.

Owner Ann Avery broke the news of Meow's passing Thursday with a photo of the cat and a brief message: "Colonel Meow passed away yesterday evening. I will post more about the details when I've had a few days to grieve. Thank you so much for your understanding, Minions. Your love and support has meant the world to us both. — Slave Beast"

According to Today, The Colonel was hospitalized in November due to heart issues. Before his passing, though, the 2-year-old kitty had garnered his share of Internet fame, as well as a Guinness World Record for Longest Fur on a Cat.

Bub, who spent some time with the record-setting cat, was kind enough to share a passel of photos of the two of them cavorting together with MTV News.

Feel free to share your own condolences in the comments below.

Justin Bieber's Limo Scuffle Caused By Radio Volume

On Wednesday (January 29) Justin Bieber turned himself into Toronto police for assault charges, and now details are emerging on what might have initially caused the scuffle between the pop star and his limo driver.

According to the driver, JB and his crew were riding around Toronto back on December 29th when the Biebs asked him to turn up the music, apparently not turning it up as loud as Bieber had wanted, the 19-year-old reportedly started yelling curse words before slapping the driver in the head multiple times.

However, Justin's lawyer Howard Weitzman says his client is innocent. In fact, a member of Bieber's entourage tells TMZ that one of the "Baby" crooner's friends is the one at fault.

Although details are still not clear, Justin is due in court on March 10th for a hearing regarding the situation. Stick with GossipCenter for all the latest on Bieber's ongoing legal troubles.

How I persuaded Ralph Fiennes to play Charles Dickens

As the film of her biography of The Invisible Woman comes to the big screen, Claire Tomalin reveals what it feels like to have your book adapted

Most writers can tell stories of how their books failed to be made into films. I had forgotten until I looked up old notes that I sold the film rights of my first book, a life of Mary Wollstonecraft: there was a lunch, a contract, a small sum of money, then nothing. Much the same happened with Mrs Jordan's Profession: a lot of interest and excitement, then it fizzled out (twice). And again with my life of Pepys. For years The Invisible Woman seemed destined to be yet another unmade film.

Biographies are, in their nature, far more difficult to make into films than novels, because novels come with plots constructed and dialogue written, whereas I don't invent dialogue for my subjects or plot their lives for them. Biographers search for traces, for evidence of activity, for signs of movement, for letters, for diaries, for photographs. You can't make a film out of that. And, as the title of The Invisible Woman tells us, its subject was an obscure person. She lived from 1839 to 1914, and it is not possible even to be sure about where she was and what she was doing for some of that time. Even in the diary of her lover she was no more than a letter 'N'. Her name, Ellen Lawless Ternan – Nelly – has no resonance. And in 1876, when she married, that name disappeared.

When it surfaced again, it was only for the fact that she caught the attention of a great writer, Charles Dickens. And since their relationship was a secret one, and remained a carefully guarded secret for decades after his death, there was not much material to play with.

But when I researched my book, I found the experiences of Nelly, and her grandmother, mother and sisters, intensely interesting. They opened up a world quite unknown to me, and illuminated Dickens in a new way. They were all professional actors, hard workers, serious in pursuing their careers, ill rewarded and never considered respectable because the theatre itself was disreputable. It happened that Dickens, who also grew up in poverty and with little education, loved the theatre passionately and cherished its reliance on imagination and spontaneity, allied to discipline and self-reliance. He saw the Ternans – widowed mother and three daughters – as embodiments of these values. So the story became how he gave the Ternans practical help and changed his own way of living altogether as he pursued the magically attractive Nelly. In the process he rejected his wife, cruelly and without compunction. His public readings became supremely important to him, and he wrote two of his greatest novels during these years, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend. Nelly was sent proofs and seems to have discussed his work with him. She was hidden in France for several years, and a child was born and died. Dickens never considered divorce.

Nelly was financially supported by Dickens but paid a price in loneliness. He could not acknowledge her as his companion in public. Theirs was a romance with harsh constraints. From Dickens, Nelly learned how to deceive. Just as he had tricked the world by using false names and installing her as Mrs Tringham in the houses he shared with her, so after his death she used the simple trick of taking 10 years off her age to protect herself from questions. She reinvented herself.

Reading on mobile? See the trailer of The Invisible Woman here

She relied on her sisters Fanny and Maria to collude with her in becoming 21 rather than 31. Both were by then married, and ready to blot out their years in the theatre. But Nelly, once married to the young clergyman who fell in love with her, had to lie for the rest of her life to him and to their children. This was, for me, the crux of the story. Only after her death did her son discover, on his return from the first world war, that his mother had given him a false account of her life. He was shattered by the discovery and hated the name of Dickens thereafter.

The Invisible Woman was published in 1990. In the mid-90s, the BBC invited me to write a four-part television serial based on the story. I toiled away, writing and rewriting, only to have it turned down by senior BBC executives.

Ten years passed. Then, out of the blue, in 2006, three new proposals for adaptations came. One was from a playwright I greatly admired, Simon Gray. We talked at length and he went on to write a play, lit with his intelligence and enthusiasm for Dickens. It is brilliant, but very short: he was ill and had not long to live. His play, Little Nell, was broadcast and played in Bath in a production by Peter Hall with a fine cast in 2007, but for a few performances only. I have no doubt it will be seen again.

The two further proposals came from a film company, Mark Shivas's Headline Pictures, and a television company. It was a difficult choice, but I opted for Headline, won over by the enthusiasm of a young script writer, Abi Morgan. After this heady moment, silence fell for two years. Shivas died, and Morgan was on a rising wave of success. I sometimes felt like a jealous lover – it seemed to me that every time I opened a newspaper I saw she was engaged on a script for someone else's book.

Then, in January 2011, Headline told me that Ralph Fiennes was interested in directing a film of The Invisible Woman. A lunch was arranged with Fiennes and Morgan. I had met Fiennes once before and found him charming, funny and modest. Now I was struck by his physical resemblance to Dickens. "You were born to play Dickens," I told him – but his plan was to direct.

Fiennes read Dickens, and about Dickens, absorbing his exuberance, his goodness and his capacity for cruelty. Tales of great men and women should include the other tales of those around them who pay the price for their greatness, and this one was no exception. Fiennes insisted that the central figure must be Nelly – and he found in Felicity Jones an actor of great intelligence, as well as beauty, to play her, and, in Joanna Scanlan, a wondrously good Mrs Dickens.

I went on thinking he must play Dickens. The more we talked about the man, the writer and the script, the more I wanted to see him in the part. At last I heard that he was growing his beard – a good sign. He had agreed to do it.

Seeing the shooting was a dreamlike experience. I spent a day in a City mansion (representing the Free Trade Hall in Manchester) where I was faced with a troop of familiar figures: Wilkie Collins, Catherine Dickens, Charley (the eldest son), Mrs Ternan, Nelly and Maria Ternan. The settings and background were immaculate, the costumes, flawless.

Next, I was invited to the Bluebell railway to see the climactic scene of the train crash at Staplehurst and its aftermath – bloodied extras stumbled about, Nelly lay prone in the wet grass with a grazed face and Dickens extricated himself from the wrecked train to look for her. The crash was big news when it happened in 1865, and pictures of the scene appeared in newspapers, along with stories of the heroism of Dickens in ministering to the wounded. Meanwhile, Nelly was smuggled away, an anonymous young woman.

In my book I say the crash threatened Dickens's privacy and brought home to Nelly the humiliation of her position – that it showed her she had to live "in the gap between what could be said and what really happened". The film seizes this moment to make the point without a word of explanation – a triumph.

It is not the same story as the one I tell. The film portrays a love story and is given a happy ending. It leaves out Nelly's deviousness and suggests that she finds resolution by confessing to a benevolent clergyman, but this is not what happened. The Margate life, and the school, failed. Her husband George had a breakdown. The clergyman betrayed Nelly's confidence. Never mind. It shows us Dickens in all his ambivalence, wreaking havoc on his wife and family – also blessedly good as he tries to help the lowest and poorest in society. It is not a simple-minded film – it allows for people being complex, changeable, human.

'American Idol' Wraps Up Auditions With An Acoustic 'No Hands'

Judges send 21 more contestants to Hollywood as phase one wraps up in Omaha.
By Adam Graham

"American Idol" wrapped phase one of its season on Thursday (January 30), rounding out its seven-city, six-episode audition tour with a trip to Omaha, Nebraska, where David Cook once auditioned and ended up winning the whole thing.

Was there another winner in the midst this time around? Several singers made lasting impressions, but there is still a lot of ground to cover between now and May's finale. A total of 21 singers graduated from Omaha and were handed tickets to Hollywood, bringing the season total to 212 hopefuls. The next "American Idol" is in there somewhere, now we just have to find out who it is.

Andrina Brogden certainly stood out from the pack, and the 18-year-old shoe store employee from Fargo is looking to right the wrongs of 12 years of "Idol" never crowning a winner from North Dakota. Brogden sang Beyonc é's "Halo" but held back with it rather than going over-the-top, which the judges chalked up to her being scared. That fear turned Harry Connick Jr. into a doubter. "You're a better than average singer. Way better than average. But not strong enough for 'American Idol,'" he told her. "I don't know if that voice is going to make it all the way through." Still, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban believed in her, and sent her on her way to Hollywood. "I've got the feeling you're going to rise to the occasion," Urban told her.

Paula Hunt had the night's strongest story. The 20-year-old from Nebraska sings for the U.S. Air Force band, and is carrying on the dream of her mother, whose singing voice was taken from her when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. Hunt flat out nailed Etta James' "All I Could Do Was Cry," singing with a confidence and elegance that came from years of singing and performing. "You have such a talent, and it still hasn't even begun to blossom," Lopez told her, and Connick said he wanted to hear her sing more. He'll get his chance in Hollywood, where she was sent with flying colors.

Alyssa Siebken gets credit for the most inventive audition song of the season, going before the judges with an acoustic rendering of Waka Flocka Flame's "No Hands" (what, "Hard in da Paint" didn't translate well to acoustic guitar?). Connick didn't buy it, telling her he didn't think her voice was strong enough, but Urban was on board, telling her, "I'd like to see where you go." With J. Lo also on board, she was headed to Hollywood. When given the news, Siebken did what many of us might do if we were given such good news: She took a victory selfie alongside Ryan Seacrest.

There were no victory selfies for Tyler Gurwicz; the 25-year-old musician and songwriter from Vermont barely slipped through his audition. His version of Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" was good enough that J. Lo gave him a thumbs up, but Urban wasn't as convinced, leaving Connick to cast the final vote. He asked for one more song — it's rare that audition singers are given that second song — and his version of Jeff Buckley's "Grace" was just good enough that Connick let him through to Hollywood. But he immediately had regrets. "That may have been my first slip in judgment," he said, and time will tell if he was correct.

Hollywood Week starts next Wednesday, with new twists promised that are sure to shake things up. And who knows, maybe it's North Dakota's time to shine after all.

Watch Rihanna And Shakira's 'Can't Remember To Forget You,' And Try Not To Gasp

These two really get along.
By Emily Blake

Shakira and Rihanna in the video for "Can't Remember To Forget You"
Photo: Ace Entertainment

Rihanna and Shakira may be singing from under a man's spell on "Can't Remember to Forget You," in the brand-new video, they're somewhere near paradise, and doing just fine on their own.

In fact, there isn't a Y chromosome to be found in the whole three-and-a-half-minute clip -- and judging from their embraces, they're totally OK with that.

Like the track itself reflects their Caribbean roots — Rih hails from Barbados; Shakira is Colombian — the clip for "Can't Remember to Forget You" seems like it came straight out of the some suave resort in Antigua. The two smoke Cubans in a cabana for two, spend an unusual amount of time dancing on walls and, at one point, hold each other with next to no clothing.

The track finds the ladies in a battle of will power, fighting a shared addiction to a man they can't shake off. In a reggae-tinged voice nothing whatsoever like "Stay," Rihanna sings "I go back again/ Fall of the train / Land in his bed / Repeat yesterday's mistakes."

"The song is about that guy that just gets under your skin and you can't leave alone," Shakira told Ryan Seacrest earlier this month. "I think every woman has been through that."

And she admitted she "honestly thought it would never happen," in an interview with Glamour, the "She Wolf" singer said working with Rihanna was "utopia." "She's the sexiest woman on the planet," she said. "And at the end of the day, we're both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real."
