American Mary – review

This sleek, cold, emetic body-horror flick centres on Mary Mason, a brilliant, beautiful young doctor whose desperate need for money to continue her surgical studies drives her to find work in a Seattle sex club. Rapidly she drifts into a bizarre world of illegal "body enhancement", which takes in everything from cosmetic surgery via repair work after sadomasochistic accidents to taking drastic revenge on the teacher who rapes her. The co-directors, clearly admirers of early Cronenberg films, are identical Canadian twins. They make a memorable appearance as rich Germans so devoted to each other that they engage Mary to perform an operation by which they swap arms.
