Funny how MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game VIII," a 36-inch television set and a phone call from Kanye West became hip-hop's most entertaining story of 2013 thus far. If you thought Yeezy's rant was surprising, just imagine how Hot 97's DJ Enuff felt, when he fielded West's out-of-the-blue phone call.
It all started on March 5, when after MTV's Hip-Hop Brain Trust decided that 'Ye would place at #7 on the "Hottest MCs in the Game VIII," the rapper called into Hot 97's Angie Martinez show to vent. "He called and at first he was like, 'Where's Angie?' " Martinez's co-host DJ Enuff recalled on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."
Angie wasn't around, so Yeezy hung up, but then decided to call back. "I'm in the middle of doing my mixshow and then he calls back and he really wanted to express whatever," Enuff said to show host Sway Calloway. "He's just venting, he's going and going and then towards the end he starts throwing you under the bus talking about a TV."
After talking about his disappointment with the list, Kanye then went off on an unexpected tangent. "I didn't want to even call to talk about this #7 list, I just wanted to tell everybody I gave Sway his first TV — and he need to remember that," he said before the phone went dead.
The television in question is Sharpeezy, the 36-inch set that West gifted Sway back before releasing his debut album The College Dropout. Enuff, who has a longstanding relationship with Sway, ribbed the MTV News correspondent. "It's your fault," he joked. "Because you put out that list, that MTV rap list. You started this."
