Director of Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, signs up for the final two films in the series, Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2
The plum Hollywood job of directing the final two parts in the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 has been handed to Francis Lawrence, who is already helming the second entry in the franchise, Catching Fire.
The Water for Elephants director entered the picture after Gary Ross, director of the successful first adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games books, unexpectedly bowed out citing time pressures as studio Lionsgate sought to capitalise on its box-office impact, as it took more than $680m (£423m) worldwide.
And in a move emulating another hit teen franchise, the Twilight Saga, the decision was then taken to turn the final book in the trilogy, Mockingjay, in two parts.
Mockingjay will star series regulars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth; the script, written by Danny Strong, will presumably follow Collins' narrative of Lawrence's character, Katniss Everdeen, leading a revolution against the oppressors of the Capitol. The projected release date for Mockingjay Part 1 is November 2014, and for Part 2 November 2015.
