Tom Cruise to play Van Helsing

The actor may sink his teeth into the role of Dracula's nemesis for Universal's reworking, to be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci

Tom Cruise is in line to play Abraham van Helsing in a new adventure for the legendary vampire-baiting Dutch doctor, reports Deadline.

Cruise is said to be attached to Universal Studios' latest attempt to bring Dracula's nemesis to the big screen following 2004's poorly-received Van Helsing, which starred Hugh Jackman in the role. The heavily-accented vampire hunter has also appeared in numerous retellings of Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror novel, Dracula, over the years.

Cruise was in line to play the role in a previous version which had Guillermo del Toro on board as a producer. The new take will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible III , under their new two-year deal with Universal. The pair also plan to reboot another of the studio's franchises, The Mummy.

"Alex and Roberto are extraordinarily talented writers and producers who know the value of a great story in building successful tent pole films," Universal said in a statement. "They have been a major part of some of Hollywood's biggest movies and television shows in recent history, and we're eager to have them build on that success at Universal."

It is not certain exactly what Kurtzman and Orci's role in the Van Helsing reboot will be. The pair are already charged with rewriting the sequel to forthcoming superhero reimagining The Amazing Spider-Man, and recently wrote JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Trek sequel.
