When you're ready to take a break from the news (and the people you're holed up with) try one of these songs instead
If you're one of the millions on the east coast anxiously awaiting hurricane Sandy's arrival (and departure) you're probably hunkered down somewhere – your apartment, a friends' house, or an evacuation shelter. Sandy is supposed to take her time passing through and in an effort to break the tension, we've put together a few tracks to take you through the storm. When you're ready to take a break from news updates, why not turn on one of these instead? You can also listen the playlist on Spotify.
Update: We're adding your songs to this list as we go. Scroll down to see the latest song additions then tell us what else we should add in the comments or on Twitter@GuardianUS
Sandy – John Travolta, from the movie Grease
No explanation needed.
Storm Coming – Gnarls Barkley
Funky, fun and actually sounds like it is not just metaphorically about a storm (even though it is).
Storm – Lenny Kravitz and Jay-Z
When you are about to turn on your roommate who you've been holed up with for days, remember the finer days with this tune. Also, bonus appearance by Brooklyn's own Jay-Z, where many of your @GuardianUS team is holed up.
Lena Horne – Stormy Weather
Nothing brings people together like never-before-seen low pressure systems, am I right? For anyone who's using this storm as an excuse to get a little closer to someone you like, this song is for you.
Stormy Sky – The Kinks
If you are stuck with a brother whom you have a deep rivalry with, it's highly recommended to skip this song.
Fairytale in the Supermarket – The Raincoats
Run out of food? Matches? Whiskey? Jam this as loud as possible while waiting in out-the-door lines.
Ann Peebles – I Can't Stand the Rain
Just like a Sandy is predicted to do, this track starts out slow and builds up to a big blast.
When It's Dark – Yo La Tengo
A nice, musical preparation for the very likely chance you will lose electricity.
Hello Operator – The White Stripes
If there is one person you will be communicating with frequently in a storm situation, it is likely to be the operator, whether you would like your landlord to explain why your ceiling leak hasn't been fixed yet or because you lost electricity in the middle of The Walking Dead.
The Hurricane – Bob Dylan
We know this storm is supposed to last a while, and if you've already reached the end of this playlist, give Dylan's 8 minute 33 second, track a whirl. And put it on repeat. Three hundred times.

Sometimes you can't make it on your own – U2
This song recommended by PeculiarBlend is a nice reminder that friends, family and neighbors can make all the difference during a hurricane. And if we're going to be stuck inside for three days, a reminder like this is necessary.
No Rain – Blind Melon
Scorpio 16 recommended what is probably one of the catchiest songs of all time. Take a minute and enjoy this 90s throwback.
Storm Warning – Mac Rebennack
When the going gets tough, the tough... have a dance party. Shake your stuff to this track recommended by bucketsealion
Riders on the Storm – The Doors
This song is a clear favorite among Guardian readers. We had several requests on Twitter and from mikedow in the comments so here it is!
I Will Survive - Cake
A couple of songs about stir craziness (and appropriate listens as the storm ramps up)
Stay - David Bowie
I guess there's always some change in the weather // This time I know we could get it together//If I did casually mention tonight//That would be crazy tonight
