L.A. Film Festival: 8-year-old star of 'Beasts' comes to Hollywood [Video]

At the ripe age of 8, Louisiana native Quvenzhané Wallis is already becoming a world traveler. In the two years since she filmed her lead role in the mystical drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild," the elementary school student has ventured to Utah, the south of France and now Hollywood. The lead in Fox Searchlight's critically acclaimed movie walked the red carpet at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Friday, where "Beasts" premiered to local audiences after playing at both Sundance and Cannes this year. Though Wallis is already becoming a festival veteran, she acted her age on Friday, where...

Dennis Hopper: The Wild Ride of a Hollywood Rebel by Peter L Winkler – review

By Ian Pindar

From the age of 19, Dennis Hopper believed that he was a genius. However, late in life even he had to admit that there was a "vast body of crap – most of the 150 films I've been in – this river of shit that I've tried to make gold out of". He started out as a promising young supporting actor in Hollywood, where he fell under the spell of James Dean (they shared an interest in grass and peyote). But when Dean suddenly died, Hopper – who once saw Dean's ghost in the back of his car – went off the rails and ruined his career. Cue descent into alcohol, drugs and violence ("The marriage reached a turning point on the afternoon that Hopper broke his wife's nose"), followed by resurrection as the co-writer, director and star of Easy Rider. In many ways, this enjoyable, well-researched and clear-eyed biography doubles as a cultural history, as Hopper goes from Rebel Without a Cause, Giant, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet to Super Mario Bros, Speed and Waterworld.

Exclusive: How Eminem Ended Up Executive Producing Skylar Grey's Debut

'I've been playing him some of my music and he slowly became more involved, so we made it official,' Grey tells MTV News.
By Nadeska Alexis

Eminem has signed on to executive produce Skylar Grey's major-label debut, Don't Look Down, due this spring, and the singer/songwriter said his involvement in the project was natural, given their close working relationship over the past couple of years.

Grey contributed to Eminem's Recovery album, penning his hit "Love the Way You Lie," and she even worked with him on Slaughterhouse's Shady Records debut this year, so it was only right to keep things moving.

"Ever since we started working together, I've been playing him some of my music, and he just slowly became more involved, so we made it official," Grey exclusively told MTV News, after it was announced that Em would oversee her LP.

The Wisconsin native has been working on her album for a few years now, explaining that the oldest song on the album was penned about two years ago, while the most recent one was recorded only last week. One of those new tracks will be the Eminem-featured single "C'mon Let Me Ride," set to debut December 11 with an accompanying video.

"Usually what happens is that I'll come up with an idea, or I'll have a piece of a song, and then I'll go to Detroit and play it for him or play a few different things for him," Grey said, breaking down the recording process with Em. "If he's feeling something, he'll run with it on his own for a while and then we reconvene and see where we're at."

"With 'C'mon Let Me Ride,' there was a lot of back and forth. The original version of the song, we all really liked the hook, but he suggested that I go back and revisit my verses, which was good. So I did that and brought it back to him, and he added his part, and then he also suggested that I add a bridge of my own. So we were bouncing it back and forth until we got it right."

Grey says the first single will bring a more fun and sarcastic side of her personality to the table and the video will really paint the full picture. " 'C'mon Let Me Ride' is sarcastic, because I'm making fun of how the media really over-sexualizes everything. That's where the inspiration comes from," she explained. "There's pieces of [the song and video] that are sarcastic, because I'm a very serious person most of the time, but there's also parts of it that show who I really am versus who a lot of other girls are. It shows the contrast.

"The whole album is very multifaceted and shows a lot of different sides of my personality#8212; including the more melancholy stuff that people know me better for — but I'm also showing this more fun sarcastic side of my personality that I've never shown in my music before, so you get to see all of it."

Look out for "C'mon Let Me Ride" on December 11.

Kate Moss Channels Morticia Addams for Halloween Bash

Out for a little Halloween night fun, Kate Moss made her way through the streets of London on Wednesday on her way to Jonathan Ross's Halloween party (October 31).

Dressed as Morticia Addams, the 38 year old model was accompanied by her husband Jamie Hince and their daughter Lila Grace for the spooktacular bash.

The party, thrown every year by Ross, featured a castle theme complete with a dungeon while drawing out Gwen Stefani, Holly Willoughby, Stephen Fry and Danielle Lineker.

Ross' neighbors also got in to the spirit, adding a giant spider and cobwebs to their home.

Taylor Swift's Red: Can Anyone Top Its Explosive Debut?

From Eminem to Lady Gaga, there are plenty of challengers to Swift's throne, but can anyone sell more than 1.21 million in a week?
By James Montgomery

Taylor Swift
Photo: Big Machine

Taylor Swift's Red just sold a staggering 1.21 million copies in its first week, the biggest debut in more than a decade. And while we've come to expect those sorts of numbers from Swift (her last album, Speak Now also broke the million mark in its first week) perhaps the bigger question is this:

Is there anyone who can beat Swift's sales, or has she set the benchmark against which all others will be measured?

It'll be tough. For starters, there's the fact that the million-seller club is a pretty exclusive one — as Keith Caulfield, Billboard's associate director of charts and retail, points out, only 18 albums have moved 1 million in a week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991 — and the last artist to join it was Lady Gaga, whose Born This Way debuted with sales of 1.1 million copies last year (though, as you're probably aware, that number was buoyed by a 99-cent fire sale through Amazon.com).

So when will anyone be able to challenge Red's numbers? With new albums from previous million-movers Gaga, Lil Wayne and Eminem still a ways off, it probably won't happen until next year ... and while Rihanna returns in just a few weeks with Unapologetic, she's never even come close to accomplishing the feat, and neither have Beyoncé or Katy Perry, for that matter.

Simply put, it may be a while until we see sales like this again.

"Anything is possible," Caulfield wrote in an email to MTV News. "However ... only incredibly extraordinary circumstances will yield another million-selling week."

Caulfield expounded on that last point, noting that, while an artist like Lil Wayne previously sold 1 million copies in a week (of his 2008 album Tha Carter III) and came close with Tha Carter IV, it seems that fans may have cooled on his more recent efforts.

"I Am Not a Human Being did 110,000 [copies] first week as a digital exclusive," he wrote. "I wouldn't think his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II will post those kinds of numbers."

And he added that artists like Gaga or Beyoncé might only get to 1 million if they have some help ... like another deep-discount sale or, say, a Super Bowl Halftime performance.

"Beyoncé's last album, 4, started with 310,000, so suggesting that her next set might move a million in a week is a bit far-fetched," Caulfield wrote. "But, we don't know how the album will be rolled out. Perhaps it will drop the same day as when she plays the Super Bowl next year? Perhaps she'll have an amazing concert ticket/ album promotion that will juice sales. We just don't know yet."

In fact, there may be just one artist capable of surpassing Swift's sales: Eminem. He's moved 1 million in a week twice before, and Caulfield thinks he may be able to do it again with his upcoming album, tentatively due next year. Though he's going to need to outpace the sales of his last album, Recovery, to even come close.

"Recovery did 741,000 in its first week. But, it was also a huge selling album in the long-term, selling 4.3 million to date and spending 122 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart," Caulfield wrote. "Comparatively, his album before that, 2009's Relapse, has moved 2.3 million. So, Recovery has really set up his next album and built up the anticipation. He certainly has a shot."

Who do you think could top 1.21 million sales? Leave your comment below!

- Would you make another movie of the series?
"Only if Stephanie Meyer wrote it. But at this point I wonder what could possibly happen. Maybe Edward could turn into a bad guy? Yeah, that would be something."

- What was the weirdest experience you've had with a fan?
"At the last Comic Con in San Diego, I was with Kristen who was also promoting Snow White and the Huntsman, and a girl approached me to ask if I felt comfortable being Prince Charming. I wasn't able to convince her that it wasn't me..."

- Wasn't it a blow to your ego?
"Not really, it only made me laugh. There was another time during a road trip, I found myself in a small village in an Indian reservation in New Mexico. As soon as I got off the car, I was surrounded by a group of kids who started calling me by my name. This should compare with story of Comic Con."

- Which was the hardest movie of the series?
"Breaking Dawn. It's two movies but we shot them back to back. Which means a 2 hour in the make-out trailer every day for 8 months."

- What will you miss next year?
"The 3 months in Vancouver. I grew attached to that city."

- Do you think that Bella becoming stronger somehow represents today's society and women's more and more important role?
"I don't know, but it would be a good thing to be honest."

- Do you like the archetypal strong woman?
"I grew up in a house full of women, my mother, my sisters, my father even. No, no, it's a joke, don't write that, I wouldn't want my dad to get hurt. I'm sorry, my sense of humour is a bit weird."

- What have these 5 years been like?
"A revolution. I never would have thought I could have this career or I would live in America. The downside is that it would have been better if it had happen before twitter and phones with cameras."

- What do you think of this job?
"We have become the most conservative people in the world. You can't even raise your voice, because everything will affect your career."

- Do you ever feel alone?
"It's hard to make new friends because you always think they actually want something else."

- The wrongest thing people say about you?
"That I'm like Edward. People tend to forget that Twilight is a movie."

- An actor you like?
"James Franco. He's intriguing in eveything he does, and he seems to have so many interests that he never does the same things."

Pack your bags for Marigold Hotel 2

Surprise hit starring Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy as English retirees in India is to get a sequel

John Madden's surprise box-office smash The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which starred Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy as English retirees in India, is to get a sequel.

MovieScope magazine reports that original screenwriter Ol Parker is set to deliver a new script to studio 20th Century Fox in the next couple of months. Dench, Nighy and Smith are all said to be willing to consider returning for the followup, though it is not yet known if Madden is in line to direct.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was not a hit with critics – the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw labelled it "a film that looks as if it has been conceived to be shown on a continuous loop in a Post Office queue" – but made an impressive $130m worldwide on a budget of just $10m. Based on author Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, its success was hailed by some as evidence of a gap in the market for films targetting an older demographic.

Smith is further catering for the silver pound with hers latest venture, the Dustin Hoffman-directed Quartet. Hoffman's debut behind the cameras, which arrives in the US on 28 December and the UK on 4 January, centres on a group of retired opera singers (Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Billy Connolly) who put on an annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday. Smith plays a new arrival at the Beecham house retirement home for gifted musicians whose interventions place her rivals' well-honed plans in disarray. Smith has picked up Oscar buzz for both performances.

Dench, meanwhile, is currently starring as 007's boss M in the latest James Bond film, Skyfall.

If 'Underemployed' Isn't A Comedy Or Drama, What Is It?

'It really is sort of everything,' producer Craig Wright tells MTV News.
By Ryan J. Downey

Craig Wright

"Underemployed" follows five friends dealing with the reality of post-college life. With those ups and downs, there are plenty of opportunities to laugh and cry, as in real life, which begs the stylistic question: is MTV's new scripted series a "dramedy"?

The show's Emmy-nominated producer, Craig Wright ("Dirty Sexy Money," "Six Feet Under"), recently offered some clarification to MTV News. "To call the show a drama would be a mistake. To call it a comedy would be a mistake."

"It really is sort of everything. I mean, the show can hold all kinds of tones and all kinds of scenes," he added.

In the show, Miles (Diego Boneta), Raviva (Inbar Lavi), Lou (Jared Kusnitz), Sophia (Michelle Ang) and Daphne (Sarah Habel) are all dealing with the various frustrations, challenges and disappointments of what they thought life would be like after college vs. how things have really turned out, particularly given the rough economy and the state of the job market.

"When I think about the show, I have this thing that I call 'The Underemployed Effect.' It's my way of identifying what the show is," explained Wright. "The show is about these young people who really aren't prepared for the world and aren't ready to be adults. But the more they try to act like adults, the sort of sillier it gets."

That's the first part of "The Underemployed Effect." The second part? "They're coming into the world with a lot of sincere hopes and dreams. And the bigger their dreams are, the more impossible it will ever be for them to achieve them.

"That's sort of touching and sad," the show-runner added.

See what celebs like Bruno Mars did on their first jobs!

The show's identity, in terms of tone, is all about that intersection between those two concepts.

"When the comedy of trying to be an adult hits up against the challenges of 'I'm not going to get to live my dream.' Then I know I'm on 'Underemployed.' That's what the show's about. It's about the tenderness and the sweetness of that struggle."

"Underemployed" returns Tuesday (October 30) on MTV at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

How would you define MTV's "Underemployed"? Give us your one-worded descriptions in the comments!

Real Reason Kristen Stewart Didn’t Go To Charity Event With Robert Pattinson

As Rob mingled with Florence Welch and Cameron Diaz at the LA County Museum of Arts Event on Oct. 27 — we now know why Kristen didn't join him!

Robert Pattinson was looking amazing when he hit up the LA County Museum of Arts Event in Los Angeles on Saturday Oct. 27. Rob, who attended the event alone, left Kristen Stewart at home-- but there's a reason why he went solo, and HollywoodLife.com has learned EXCLUSIVELY why they weren't there together.

Why RPatz Was Flying Solo

"The reason that Rob went to the LACMA event by himself is because Kristen didn't want to go to the event and take away from what the night was about," an insider tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. Our source adds, "If they were both there, then people would be talking about them and watching them rather then honoring those that were being honored. Plus they are saving being together for the Breaking Dawn red carpet." Looks like, thankfully, there is no trouble in paradise for the Twilight twosome! And we can't wait to see them together at the Breaking Dawn red carpet! So HollywoodLifers, do you think Kristen made the right decision by not attending? Sound off below!

Green Day Debuts "The Forgotten" Video for "Breaking Dawn: Part 2"

After cancelling several tour dates, Green Day has released the music video for "The Forgotten" from the soundtrack for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

The tune is the band's first involvement in the blockbuster franchise and will be released on the movie's soundtrack on November 13th, three days before it hits theaters.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt announced the cancellation of tour dates from the end of September until December 10th, as well as all scheduled appearances for January and February. Sorry to disappoint fans, he added, "Obviously the timing for this isn’t ideal, but Billie Joe’s well-being is our main concern. We are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well, and we want to thank you all for the outpouring of support and well wishes that we have received, and we can’t wait to see you all again soon."

However, drummer Tré Cool also announced that their next album, Green Day ¡Tré!, will be moved up to December 11th, 2012 from its original release date of January 15th, adding, "We feel bad we have to delay our tour, so to make up for it we want to give our fans the music earlier than we had planned. If we couldn’t be there to play it for you live, the least we could do was give you the next best thing.”

Hurricane Sandy playlist: 10 songs to get you through the 'Frankenstorm'

When you're ready to take a break from the news (and the people you're holed up with) try one of these songs instead

If you're one of the millions on the east coast anxiously awaiting hurricane Sandy's arrival (and departure) you're probably hunkered down somewhere – your apartment, a friends' house, or an evacuation shelter. Sandy is supposed to take her time passing through and in an effort to break the tension, we've put together a few tracks to take you through the storm. When you're ready to take a break from news updates, why not turn on one of these instead? You can also listen the playlist on Spotify.

Update: We're adding your songs to this list as we go. Scroll down to see the latest song additions then tell us what else we should add in the comments or on Twitter@GuardianUS

Sandy – John Travolta, from the movie Grease

No explanation needed.

Storm Coming – Gnarls Barkley

Funky, fun and actually sounds like it is not just metaphorically about a storm (even though it is).

Storm – Lenny Kravitz and Jay-Z

When you are about to turn on your roommate who you've been holed up with for days, remember the finer days with this tune. Also, bonus appearance by Brooklyn's own Jay-Z, where many of your @GuardianUS team is holed up.

Lena Horne – Stormy Weather

Nothing brings people together like never-before-seen low pressure systems, am I right? For anyone who's using this storm as an excuse to get a little closer to someone you like, this song is for you.

Stormy Sky – The Kinks

If you are stuck with a brother whom you have a deep rivalry with, it's highly recommended to skip this song.

Fairytale in the Supermarket – The Raincoats

Run out of food? Matches? Whiskey? Jam this as loud as possible while waiting in out-the-door lines.

Ann Peebles – I Can't Stand the Rain

Just like a Sandy is predicted to do, this track starts out slow and builds up to a big blast.

When It's Dark – Yo La Tengo

A nice, musical preparation for the very likely chance you will lose electricity.

Hello Operator – The White Stripes

If there is one person you will be communicating with frequently in a storm situation, it is likely to be the operator, whether you would like your landlord to explain why your ceiling leak hasn't been fixed yet or because you lost electricity in the middle of The Walking Dead.

The Hurricane – Bob Dylan

We know this storm is supposed to last a while, and if you've already reached the end of this playlist, give Dylan's 8 minute 33 second, track a whirl. And put it on repeat. Three hundred times.

}

Sometimes you can't make it on your own – U2

This song recommended by PeculiarBlend is a nice reminder that friends, family and neighbors can make all the difference during a hurricane. And if we're going to be stuck inside for three days, a reminder like this is necessary.

No Rain – Blind Melon

Scorpio 16 recommended what is probably one of the catchiest songs of all time. Take a minute and enjoy this 90s throwback.

Storm Warning – Mac Rebennack

When the going gets tough, the tough... have a dance party. Shake your stuff to this track recommended by bucketsealion

Riders on the Storm – The Doors

This song is a clear favorite among Guardian readers. We had several requests on Twitter and from mikedow in the comments so here it is!

I Will Survive - Cake

A couple of songs about stir craziness (and appropriate listens as the storm ramps up)

Stay - David Bowie

I guess there's always some change in the weather // This time I know we could get it together//If I did casually mention tonight//That would be crazy tonight
Tell us what else we should add or listen to the whole list on Spotify:

Halle Berry & Nahla's Pumpkin Patch Playdate

Getting into the Halloween spirit with her daughter, Halle Berry and Nahla visited Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch in Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 30).

Wearing a brown and black sleeveless top, black pants, and black boots, the "Cloud Atlas" star joined in the fun by zipping down the slide with her face-painted 4-year-old.

Recently, the 46-year-old actress expressed an interest to play activist Angela Davis on the big screen. In the latest issue of InStyle magazine, Halle says, "Her story is so fascinating. I would love to bring it to the screen. I would pick her brain to have a better understanding of her affiliation with the Black Panthers and that period from the 1960s."

Last year, Ms. Berry was approached by the Queen of Soul herself to play Aretha Franklin in a biopic, but she graciously declined, telling E!, "If I could carry a tune, I’d consider it. Someone should tell Aretha that I can’t do her justice.”

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson Buying Vacation Home In England

Aw! The rekindled lovebirds are looking at buying a romantic cottage in the seaside town of Cornwall, near Rob’s family home in England.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are so determined to get their relationship back on track that, not only are they planning a Thanksgiving trip to Australia, they are now searching for a holiday home in England. These are the necessary measures they are taking to rebuild their romance, as Rob still has issues trusting Kristen.

Kristen and Rob want to buy a holiday home in the rural town of Cornwall or the Isle of Wight, as it is near where Robert grew up in England, but more importantly, they want a quiet retreat to escape to when media attention becomes too intense in LA.

A source tells new! magazine, “They know they need somewhere discreet and low-key to hide away in and have some serious downtime, so they are looking in Cornwall and the Isle of Wight and some of Rob’s family are there so it all makes sense.” It is reported that they plan to ring in the new year in the Isle of Wight this year.

In the meantime, the pair have begun promotion

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining

'Hacking down the door with an axe was easy – all Jack had to do was make the wood crack well'

Jan Harlan, executive producer

Stanley Kubrick thought hard about whether to do The Shining, because horror wasn't his thing. Then Stephen King gave him the go-ahead to change his book, so Stanley agreed – and wrote a much more ambiguous script.

It's clear instantly there's something foul going on. At the little hotel, everything is like Disney, all kitsch wood on the outside – but the interiors don't make sense. Those huge corridors and ballrooms couldn't fit inside. In fact, nothing makes sense.

Stanley didn't travel, so he never went to Oregon where the exteriors were done. Whenever you see actors outside, they're in the backlot of Elstree Studios in London. The snow was made of formaldehyde and salt, while the fog was finely sprayed vegetable oil.

Stanley never considered any other actors for the lead. Jack Nicholson was the only choice. And you don't audition Jack. Shelley Duvall, who played his wife, was spotted in another film. It would have been totally wrong to have a screen beauty – we needed a good character actor.

Some scenes were easier than people imagine: Jack hacking down the door with an axe was peanuts. All he needed to do was make the wood crack well. Shelley had a much harder time, because she had to be over-the-top scared all the time. Stanley was constantly telling her to look more afraid.

He always said never try to explain something you don't understand: the moment you do, you fall on your face. So Jack writes that silly sentence over and over and starts chewing the curtains. It doesn't make sense that he doesn't realise he's sick. Or that there are ghosts. It's a great film – but if you want an explanation, forget it.

Joe Turkel, actor

I had devised four interpretations of my character, Lloyd the barman, and I wondered which Stanley would like. I showed him the first – the quiet, good-to-see-you one – and he picked that. Things were always either fine or good with him. He didn't do hyperbole.

He worked Shelley to death. She called her boyfriend in LA and said, "Get your ass out here and look after me." Her scenes were so difficult, all that screaming – and when you're dealing with Stanley, you can't wing it. You have to hit it.

Halfway through shooting one of our takes, Jack leaned over to me, at the bar, and said: "Joe, we've been shooting this thing for three weeks. Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go crazy – I'm gonna start four feet in the air then go up into the stratosphere." The opening line should have been: "Hi Lloyd, it's good to see you." But he said: "Lloyd, how the hell are you? I haven't seen you in a month of fucking Sundays." I was saying, "Splendid, Mr Torrance", as he was getting wilder and wilder. I could see Stanley getting mad. After we finished, Stanley walked on and said: "Gee Jack, that opens up a whole new can of corn." I cracked up, Jack fell on the floor laughing, and Stanley knew he was being had. And he roared.

Another day, Jack said to me: "Let's go to the fight tonight." Stanley asked who was fighting. Jack said Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks, for the heavyweight title. Stanley was standing there, looking through a camera at an angle, and he said: "Ali's the champ, you're wasting your time." Jack replied: "No, Spinks is the champ." Stanley stood up, summoned his secretary and said: "Call my bookie." Jack and I looked at each other. He put $5,000 on Ali then he said: "Boxing is as crooked as the picture business. There's no way they'll let Spinks win – the fight business won't make a dime. It's a fix."

Ali won. Jack and I went. Stanley didn't because he edited footage every night. "Stanley hustled as a kid," I said to Jack, "and he's hustling now." He'd been a chess hustler: he used to beat everybody when he was 12, grown men in the parks of Manhattan. He would go to the movies with his winnings.

• The Shining is rereleased on Friday with nationwide Halloween previews tomorrow.

Argo rises as Paranormal Activity falls

Commercial fortunes of Ben Affleck-directed picture grow, along with awards prospects

A slow session in the US followed the previous week's bump with Paranormal Activity 4. Said horror movie slid three places to fourth in its second weekend and is on course to become the lowest in the franchise (Stateside, that is) by some margin. The story of the weekend was the rise of Argo, which climbed to the top of the pile in its third weekend on release through Warner Bros. Ben Affleck's widely admired directing showcase is making stately progress at the box office and this will give it commercial clout as the awards season moves forward, which never hurts a contender's prospects.

The top 10 contains one other awards hopeful in the form of Cloud Atlas, which Warner Bros launched in third place on $9.4m (£5.9m). This one needs positive word of mouth because as anybody who's read David Mitchell's tome will attest, it's nigh on impossible to encapsulate the plot in a snappy 90-second TV spot. That's probably why the film-makers released that grand, bewildering five-minute trailer before the movie's world premiere at the Toronto International film festival in September.

Directors Tom Tykwer and the so-called Wachowski Starship – the sibling duo behind The Matrix franchise that have morphed from brothers to brother and sister – left out plenty of material from the book and it still clocks in at around two hours 45 minutes. It's worth investing the time. Cloud Atlas is a ridiculously ambitious product of the independent space and first arrived at the Cannes market in 2011, where sales agent Focus Features International touted it to distributors from around the world and it quickly emerged that this was one of four indie projects at the time budgeted at $100m. That's an almost unheard of cost for a non-studio movie but there's no doubt you can see the money on the screen.

Three other new releases spluttered into action. Next best was Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which opened through Open Road and tied for fifth place with Taken 2 on $8m. It received a critical mauling and let's leave it at that. Paramount opened the comedy Fun Size in 10th place on a miserable $4.1m, while the Gerard Butler surfing drama Chasing Mavericks couldn't even break into the top 10 – distributor Fox had to make do with a dismal $2.2m debut in 13th place. It's brutal out there in US distribution. Audiences are smart, bored and easily distracted by other entertainment platforms.

That said, I'm hoping that two movies prosper next week. The first is Flight, Paramount's big Oscar contender starring Denzel Washington. The drama marks Robert Zemeckis's first return to live-action since he directed Cast Away in 2000. Zemeckis has plied his trade in motion-capture animation for the past decade but he's lost none of his live-action nous. Washington is excellent as a troubled airline pilot whose mid-flight heroics lead to an unwelcome spotlight on his private life. It could go all the way at the Oscars. The other one to watch out for next weekend is Disney's family movie Wreck-It Ralph. Hollywood has been trying to crack an animated movie about video games for years (don't ask me why); you have to have hope it'll be good as the animation contenders for the awards season have been pretty lifeless so far.

North American top 10, 26-28 Oct 2012

1. Argo, $12.4m. Total: $60.8m
2. Hotel Transylvania, $9.5m. Total: $130.4m
3. Cloud Atlas, $9.4m
4. Paranormal Activity 4, $8.7m. Total: $42.6m
=5. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, $8m
=5. Taken 2, $8m. Total: $117.4m
7. Here Comes the Boom, $5.5m. Total: $30.6m
8. Sinister, $5.07m. Total: $39.5m
9. Alex Cross, $5.05m. Total: $19.4m
10. Fun Size, $4.1m

Andrew McCarthy: from 80s heart-throb to travel writer

He was the Brat Pack actor who oozed charm as the perfect boyfriend in films such as Pretty in Pink and St Elmo's Fire. But in reality he was a celebrity-shy loner who has turned to travel writing to find himself

"So if there's a lull in the conversation feel free to fill it by giving him my number."

"Can you just tell him that I love him?"

This is just a small selection of emails I received from my thirtysomething female friends – all generally sensible members of society – when they heard that I was to interview the actor Andrew McCarthy. If you are from a similar demographic, there is a high chance that you yourself are making various similar squeaks and bleats now. If you are not, your face is likely to be something of a question mark.

So for the benefit of those in the latter group, let us go back to a simpler, more innocent time when young actors didn't have to look computer-simulated to get decent roles in films. This time was called the 1980s and a group of twentysomething actors, soon dubbed the Brat Pack, dominated the American youth film market. Each had their cosy and eventually constricting niche: Molly Ringwald was the princess, Rob Lowe was the pinup, Judd Nelson was the bad boy, no one was really sure what Emilio Estevez was – and Andrew McCarthy was the dream boyfriend. His performances in films such as St Elmo's Fire, Less Than Zero, Mannequin and, most of all, Pretty in Pink, with that puppyish face, those soulful eyes and hesitant but – you just knew – deeply sensitive demeanour, made him the template for the perfect swain for a generation.

McCarthy was the boy for girls who found Judd Nelson too threatening and Rob Lowe too cheesy; in other words, for sensitive girls who would become overly reflective adults who remember those first crushes a little too deeply.

But just as teenage girls grow up, so do the objects of their affections, and the McCarthy that I find in the dining room of the Savoy hotel in London is different in instructive ways. Let's deal with the physical first: he is slim but not, happily, in the pocket-sized proportions one generally expects from actors. Despite being a month shy of 50, he has lustrous hair, but the youthful chubbiness of his face, while still handsome, has been replaced by a sharper profile. Yet he is as jittery as the angst-ridden youths he played in his best-known films, constantly pushing his rolled-up cotton napkin back and forth as he talks at a nervy speed, piling in 10 sentences when one will do. He makes eye contact for about one second out of every 20.

Part of McCarthy's appeal in the 80s was his aloof detachment. His characters would hold themselves at arm's length from the action, inspecting it sceptically (and seeing as he was in Mannequin and Weekend at Bernie's, two films that have good claim to be the daftest of the 80s, one can hardly blame him). In reality, too, McCarthy kept his fame at something of a distance, exaggerating, he now admits, a "mask of casual disinterest" in order to cope with the sudden fame he had run towards but then felt unsure about when he achieved it.

Yet now, he has removed the mask and what is beneath is a lesson to all of us who grew up wanting to marry Blane from Pretty in Pink. In recent years, McCarthy, has become a travel writer, working for publications such as the New York Times and the Atlantic, and he has now written a book, The Longest Way Home, which combines his travel writing with self-exploration. He stresses that it's not a "Brat Pack tell-all", which probably came as an initial disappointment to prospective publishers. Instead, it's something closer to a male Eat, Pray, Love – Elizabeth Gilbert's bestseller about how a woman recovered from a painful divorce by going on one hell of a gap year.

In his book, McCarthy sets off on his travels to try to understand his resistance to settling down with his Irish girlfriend, known as D, the mother of his daughter (he also has a son from a previous marriage). As with fame, he ran toward this relationship only then to hold it at bay, repeating a lifetime's emotional pattern of what he describes as "push, pull, forward and retreat". It turns out that the idealised boyfriend is not so great at intimacy.

However, he can write: a review in the New York Times praised the book's "fine writing and sensitive mind", and McCarthy is strikingly honest about himself and the ingrained tendencies that stop him connecting fully with his family. Yet this self-exposure for strangers seems somewhat ironic considering how much of the book is about his inability to communicate with those closest to him.

He makes the first of many nervous laughs when asked about this: "Yeah, um, the book became much more personal as I wrote it, but it's exposing about my human-ness as opposed to stuff and stories. I think we can all hide all day long behind good stories. But I write about human-ness, so hopefully I create in readers a sense of 'Oh yeah, I know that', and I disappear."

Although McCarthy has striven to be seen as something more than "former Brat Packer" I must apologise to him and say that the whole time I was with him I felt I was talking with Kevin Dolenz, the aspiring journalist he played in St Elmo's Fire, a character he admits "particularly suited me". The jitteriness, the urgency to express himself, that sense of ambivalence: it's all so very Kevin that I half expected McCarthy to break out the bongos and sing Respect in the middle of the Savoy. Unfortunately the ambivalence that looked so adorable on-screen proved less appealing off it for those who had to deal with his "limited threshold for intimacy". His passion for writing, which he talks about with the zeal of a convert, is also Kevin-esque, and McCarthy is clearly grateful to have found a new creative outlet, which he only tapped into after giving up alcohol at 29 when that started to become problematic.

"Carl Jung said alcoholism is a low-level spiritual search and then, through writing, I found a new way to try to communicate that. But I've had easy access to my feelings all my life," he says, a phrase that brings to mind a paraphrase of the great Nora Ephron quote: "Beware a man who's in touch with his feelings because the only feelings he's in touch with are his own."

McCarthy was born and raised in New Jersey, the shy third son out of four boys. Never academic, he decided to try his luck at acting and got his first film role at 20 in the schlocky Jacqueline Bisset vehicle Class, alongside Rob Lowe. The turning point was when he was cast in St Elmo's Fire and he became ever after associated with the Brat Pack, a position that brought him fame if not much satisfaction.

"It just wasn't me. I felt unseen and pigeonholed, and once you're pigeonholed, people can dismiss you," he says.

He speaks, and writes, so disparagingly about those years ("They just weren't my kinda movies," he says at one point, heartbreakingly) that tied him for ever to a group of people with whom he was never actually friends, that it comes as a surprise when he then insists it was "a wondrous, wonderful time … And when I go on TV now to promote the book and they show clips from those movies, I see the acting is dubious at times but I can also see the delight in my eyes to be there – with you – in that moment. The unabashed delight in being alive was absolutely communicated. That was appealing to go, Yes! Me! You! Us! Now!" he gasps.

It is not really giving away the ending of the book to say that McCarthy does achieve a kind of happiness and also marries D, or Dolores as she is better known. But if so much of his love of travel was predicated on a need for escape and solitude, hasn't he killed his new career as a travel writer by achieving contentment?

"Oh going away still holds an appeal – I wouldn't go so far as to say contentment," he laughs.

Maturity comes to us all. Eventually.

The Longest Way Home by Andrew McCarthy is published by Simon and Schuster, priced £10.99. To order a copy for £8.79, including p&p, visit the Guardian bookshop, guardianbookshop.co.uk
