Timberlake could join Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff in big screen outing for 90s show, reports suggest
Justin Timberlake is being sought to be the star of a new Baywatch movie, according to reports.
Suggestions that the former boyband singer turned actor could join Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff in a big screen outing for the 90s show appear to have emanated from a report on Twitch last week. They have now been picked up across the web, though there is no word from Timberlake on the matter.
Twitch said Timberlake would play a disgraced former Olympic swimmer who tries out for the Baywatch crew. Hasselhoff and Anderson are both part of producers' plans.
Baywatch ran for 12 years until 2001, spawning spin-offs such as Baywatch Hawaii and Baywatch Nights, in which Hasselhoff joins a private-eye agency and begins investigating paranormal occurrences. A big screen iteration has been in the works for some time but so far has not made it into production.
Quite why Timberlake, now a successful Hollywood star after strong turns in Alpha Dog, The Social Network and In Time, would want to take the lead in a Baywatch movie is not explained in the Twitch report, but other sites have suggested the new film is being pitched as a humorous 21 Jump Street-style take on the original concept. The latter proved a critical and commercial success earlier this year by revisiting the long-running 80s show about police officers going undercover at US high schools.
