Peter Jackson defends Hobbit preview

The Hobbit director will not abandon 48 frames per second despite criticisms that format looks like 'daytime television'

Peter Jackson says he will not abandon his quest to bring higher frame rates to cinemas after preview footage from The Hobbit met with a mixed reaction from audiences last week.

Footage from the Kiwi director's forthcoming two-part Lord of the Rings prequel, screened in the 48-frames-per-second format which Jackson has been championing as the future of cinema, was compared to modern sports broadcasts or daytime television by critics at the annual CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. But Jackson said the 10-minute preview many not have given the audience enough time to adjust to the new experience, and pointed out that post-production work on the footage had not yet been completed.

"It wasn't particularly surprising because it is something new," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "Ultimately, it is different in a positive way, especially for 3D, especially for epic films."

Jackson added: "It does take you a while to get used to. Ten minutes is sort of marginal, it probably needed a little bit more. Another thing that I think is a factor is it's different to look at a bunch of clips – and some were fast-cutting, montage-style clips. This is a different experience than watching a character and story unfold.

"We are certainly going to experiment with different finishing techniques to give the 48 frames a look that is more organic. But that work isn't due to start until we wrap photography in July."

Jackson said he had no plans to cut a trailer in the higher frame rate format. "The 48 frames is something you should experience with the entire film," he said. "A two-and-a-half minute trailer isn't enough time to adjust to the immersive quality."

The Hobbit looks like being the first major film shot at 48 frames per second, twice the rate of the industry standard 24 frames per second, which has been in place since the silent movie era. James Cameron has also championed higher frame rates and says he may shoot his Avatar sequels at an even higher 60 frames per second.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, part one of Jackson's adaptation of JRR Tolkien's 1937 beloved children's fantasy novel, hits cinemas in December and is expected to be one of the year's biggest blockbusters. Part two, There and Back Again, follows in time for Christmas 2013.

Are you ready for your chinplant?

'A new chin' is the latest plastic surgery craze in the US, but could it catch on in Britain?

The American tradition of high school proms has its unique set of signifiers: a corsage, a questionable suit/gown, a limousine. In 2012, we can add "a new chin" to the shopping list for the big night.

A report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has revealed a 71% increase in the number of chin implants ("chinplants") in the last year. One surgeon suggests smartphones are a likely contributing factor. "The rise of more informal images, captured ... when they are leaning over a buffet maybe, has shown them angles of their face they had not seen in a mirror."

Is this coming to the UK? A BAAPS spokesperson says they're "not in the top ten, certainly". Plymouth-based plastic surgeon James McDiarmid doesn't think so, either. "It's not something I've seen a major increase in. Chin augmentation is something that patients don't usually ask for," he says. "They usually come in and say 'It's my neck' or 'It's my nose'." Any requested celebrity chins? "Not really," says McDiarmid. "Maybe if I was in the big city, I'd have people asking for a George Clooney or a Brad Pitt – two significant Hollywood chins. I think photos are helpful, it gives you an idea of how far they'd like to take it and you can tell them if it's going to be impossible."

Comment on Kristen Stewart Elle UK Subscriber Issue Cover by NovaNoir

How do you know?  Maybe she looks and stands like this all the time, but in this case nobody told her what to do. She stares like she always does: Half on drugs and half like she's uninterested in everything.
And the clothes...well she never had taste. All this awkward cuts she wears on other pictures and the stupid colours.
She is just a sellout like everybody else, if she wears that ugly crap althoug it dosn't suit her.

'Avengers' Soars To Huge Foreign Box-Office Debut

Film breaks records in Mexico, Brazil and other foreign markets a week ahead of its U.S. opening.

The Avengers have already begun their world domination. Marvel's crossover movie opened in 39 foreign markets over the weekend, a week before its scheduled U.S. release, and the records have already started to shatter.

Premiering in only 70 percent of the total foreign territories, "The Avengers" has already earned $178.4 million. That total includes record-breaking opens in Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong and seven other markets, according to Box Office Mojo. Australia's $19.7 million total was the second-highest opening in that country's history.

The $178.4 million total at the international box office ranks as only the ninth-highest foreign opening ever, but it should be taken into account that large markets like China and Russia won't get "The Avengers" until later this week, the same day it opens in the U.S.

Box Office Mojo predicted that "The Avengers" could end up with $600 million at the foreign box office alone, a figure "The Hunger Games" just passed with its global total.

Early tracking and box-office analysis have already predicted that when "The Avengers" does finally open Stateside, it will be enormous. Several experts have projected a possible domestic opening week of around or above $150 million. That opening would put the film well above the series' best debut, "Iron Man 2," which opened in the summer of 2010 to $128 million.

If "The Avengers" were to open above the $150 million mark, it would then be in contention for one of the highest U.S. opens of all time. The current champ, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" opened to $169 million last year.

Mia Hansen-Løve: the broken heart that made me a film-maker

The French director talks about the teenage love affair that led her to make films, and the thrill of discovering a new star actress

Your forthcoming film, Goodbye First Love, is about teenage romance. What were you like as a teenager?

Love was everything to me. My parents were both philosophy teachers, so I was brought up to value it more than money or possessions. It was all about beauty, truth, freedom and love. I did have a big, very real, very powerful relationship with someone from when I was 15 till 19. I thought he would be the only one I could ever love, and when it was gone it left a void in me. I think I've tried to turn that void into some kind of creativity ever since, using the sadness to do something poetic.

Love is universal as a topic for a film. I mean, everyone has a first love that stays with them, don't they?

It may be universal, but that wasn't the point of making the film. You hope that people connect to your subjects, but actually I was just thinking, maybe selfishly, to make it as personal as possible. I'm not hiding the fact that it's autobiographical, but I felt the urge to make this film. It was some feeling inside of me I had to get rid of, to give a frame to a chaotic emotion inside of me. Life is chaos, and I wanted to use art to get some order on it.

There are some lovely tunes in this film – music is clearly very important to your work.

And to my life, I would say. Yes, the Spanish songs are actually by a Chilean folk artist called Violeta Parra, who committed suicide. Her music is beautiful. I'm also really happy to use British folk artist Johnny Flynn's "The Water" in this film. We got so into him that actually he's now going to act in the next film of my husband, Olivier Assayas.

Now you mention Assayas [as a teenager, Hansen-Løve acted in his early film Late August, Early September], this was your first film as a mother, wasn't it? Your daughter, Vicky, must be two now.

I was pregnant with her when I wrote Goodbye First Love. She is two and half now. That must have influenced it in some way, but I don't know how. Maybe I was more caring to all the characters, like I was mothering them along. I certainly felt less vulnerable becoming a mother. It made me stronger, and gave me a confidence I'd never experienced before.

Did that help you deal with opening up such a well of emotions as you clearly felt here, confessing your teenage self on screen, almost?

An autobiographical film isn't easy – you're in all the characters, so close to them. In a way, you want to deflect this, so originally the lead character in this was the boy, but I discovered while writing it that I don't know boys so well as far as love is concerned, and that actually is the point of the film, the key to it. I wanted this boy to remain unexplained, his behaviour a mystery, so I had to be brave and honest and tell it from the girl's view, and yes, that's me.

How has being a mother changed you?

I'm happier now than I was before.

You chose Lola Créton as the actress to represent yourself. Tell me about her – this film could make the next French star.

She was 16 when we began shooting, and I wanted to do something unusual. I'm always annoyed when films have actresses who are 27 playing teenagers. It always breaks the spell for me. So I wanted a real teenager here, even though this film does then span another 10 years. I thought it'd be a nice change to see someone playing older, even if they did look a bit young in the later stages. But Lola is so delicate and shy.

Like all French actresses, she seems very happy to get her clothes off.

Aha. You English always love that. I can say that for her it was actually a big deal. But what's amazing is that, when the cameras rolled, she was free and sensuous like a cat. It was as if she was discovering her own sexuality before our eyes, but, as soon as the filming stopped, she'd retreat behind sheets, clothes immediately.

She has a little craziness about her, like a young Adjani, but she's so shy with press, with me, with her mum. She's not at ease with words. I think she truly can only express herself through acting. It's her vocation.

If I may say, 15 is very young to be having sex and a full-blown love affair. But, then again, one might term you a precocious talent. Your last film, The Father of My Children, was a very mature exploration of grief, and many were surprised that a 27-year-old could be the author of such a sensitive work. Was this film a riposte to accusations of precocity?

It's certainly something I wanted to explore. You know, I became a film-maker very young because I was very unhappy, basically. I had a broken heart because I loved this impossible man, and I spent my teenage years mostly crying. But I also loved being in love – at least I wasn't bored and just hanging around a shopping mall.

But how did you know that making films was the thing for you?

I poured all that emotion into some very terrible poetry at first, but I hated the solitariness of writing and it all felt false to me. It was only when I made a short film that it all clicked and I felt this was the right outlet for me.

What are you doing next? You once mentioned something about a house music movie?

Yes, I'm doing it, I hope. It's a massive project, though, sort of a two-part movie called Eden. My brother was quite a successful DJ in the 1990s, Sven Løve. He was part of a group who did residencies at the Queen club in Paris and out of that came Daft Punk and that whole French house movement. It was a huge chunk of my life. So I'm trying to use that era to tell a big love story, but the music rights alone are costing half a million euros, and I need lots of crowd scenes and to hire big nightclubs, so it's getting very expensive.

Will all those French house stars be in it?

I think so. It's a very important moment in French culture. That's what we all think, anyway. I might not call it Eden in English. you see, I'm already thinking of the English title. It might be Lost in Music, after the Sister Sledge song.

Good idea. In honour of the Larry Levan remix of it, I hope.

Ah, I see you are in the right spirit for this film already. OK, let's call it that. This seems a good omen for it.

'Avengers' Version Of Hulk 'More Accessible,' Mark Ruffalo Says

'He's got a wry sense of humor about himself,' actor tells MTV News at Tribeca Film Festival.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Of all the actors coming together to form the Avengers, Mark Ruffalo decidedly had the most to prove. After two previous Hulk films left fans largely unsatisfied, a new actor in the role could either lead to another letdown or, finally, to a version that felt true to the comics.

Fortunately for Ruffalo, early reviews of "The Avengers" overwhelming point to his version of Bruce Banner as one of the highlights of the film. MTV News caught up with Ruffalo at the closing-night ceremonies for the Tribeca Film Festival to get his take on the Hulk's positive reception and to find out what was different this time around.

Ruffalo felt the pressure that came with the role of the Hulk as soon as he signed on to be the third actor in as many films. "It was very daunting. I've never had a part so harshly reviewed before I even shot a single frame of film," he said. "The fanboys had a lot to say about it — granted, they had a great deal of care about this part and a lot of sentimentality as well, as do I, growing up on it."

The actor said that the latest technology gave him the biggest advantage over the first two iterations of the character. "There have been other great performances as Banner. The only real edge that I had was that the technology had changed so much since that last movie that I actually got to play the Hulk," Ruffalo said.

This latest version of the Hulk takes a different approach to the character, giving him a dry sense of humor about his condition, but Ruffalo gave credit to both Eric Bana and Edward Norton for helping lay the foundation in the first two films.

"I just think it's a natural progression of the other performances. When you find the guy at this point, he's tired of running. He's got a wry sense of humor about himself," Ruffalo said. "He's ready to turn and face the world. He's got a charming world-weariness that's kind of knocked the edges off of him and made him slightly more accessible."

Buck: the real-life horse whisperer

He can rope a cow in a snowstorm and perform a caesarean with a penknife. Buck Brannaman tells Catherine Shoard why city folk are galloping to see his new documentary

Buck Brannaman is aware he has enormous hands. But as befits the "Zen master of the horse world", he's pretty modest about them. "Perhaps it's just that people in Britain don't have very big hands," says the wrangler who has been tossed off just about every troubled steed from Montana to Idaho. "I've shook hands with a lot of guys today and I was thinking, 'Well, mine just covers yours up completely.'"

It's not just the warm swaddle of those big mitts that makes a meeting with the original horse whisperer (the man who turned fixing abused and injured animals into an art form) feel like a soothing dose of ketamine. It's also the easy formality with which he wears his Stetson, the fleeciness of his lumberjack cardie, the gentle beam of his cobalt eyes. It's plain lulling.

In the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer, based on the book by Nicholas Evans that was inspired by Brannaman, Robert Redford is a blowdried smoothie, stroking colts, flashing his gnashers, rehabilitating teen rider Scarlett Johansson – and her horse – after a riding accident cost her a leg. But audiences can now see the real thing thanks to Buck, a quiet, moving documentary about Brannaman that had crowds braying with approval at the Sundance festival last year.

Why does he think Buck strikes such a chord? "It moves your spirit even if you're not a horse person. Even in urban environments, it was so well received it almost makes you feel optimistic about humans." In Brannaman parlance, that's high praise: the ranch clinics he runs in the US, he says, are more about helping horses with people problems than vice versa.

"We were showing the film in New York and, obviously, I'm really out of my element there. But it was neat for me to learn that we're not so different – even though none of those people had ever been on a ranch, or probably within 10 feet of a horse, or more than a mile from where they were born. They've spent their whole life surrounded by concrete! They think they're pretty worldly, but I just think they've been living in a cave."

Buck is sick of the assumption that rural folk have more restricted horizons, but what especially gets his goat is the use of the word "cowboys" to denote amateurs. "People will use the term like it's a nasty name, when it's actually a noble and sophisticated and dangerous way to make a living. It takes less time to become a brain surgeon than it does to become a good cowboy."

The worst offenders are "self-appointed intellectuals who would be the first to condemn someone for saying something more mainstream prejudicial. They think we eat raw meat and drag women around by their hair. I asked someone a few years ago, 'If you think a cowboy is such an ignorant primitive, then why is it that in a snowstorm he can rope a cow in the middle of the pasture and then, with his pocket knife and needle and thread, perform a caesarean? It's a very complicated procedure: sewing up the uterus and all the muscles and everything that's connected." So what did they say? "They were stunned. They said, 'They do caesareans with a pocket knife?' I said, 'All the time, man, yeah.'"

Buck the documentary is the work of debut film-maker Cindy Meehl, who was so struck by Brannaman while on one of his retreats that she ditched her career as an artist and fashion designer to learn the tricks of the trade. Her film traces Brannaman's background: born in Wisconsin 50 years ago, he was badly beaten by his father until a gym teacher spotted the welts on his back; he was moved to the care of a foster family, who were long-time horse-lovers. With them, Buck discovered an affinity with the beasts that has informed both his career and his philosophy. "Horses don't care whether you're rich or poor, attractive or not, big or small, what colour you are. The horse has no prejudice and neither do I. The horse will respond to you based on how you make him feel. Horses don't have greed, spite, hate, jealousy, envy."

He believes he can read humans almost as well. "That is my living – to assess a person so I can help. You get dialled into someone pretty fast." It must be quite a responsibility. "Always. You're put in a powerful position being the teacher at the clinic, the one with the microphone. You don't wanna hurt someone's feelings. But you need to be effective. And there are some people who have a hide about that thick" – he stretches those jumbo digits – "and then you'll have someone whose hide is so thin you can see right through it."

The success of Buck has led to Brannaman running into the occasional celebrity as he promotes it. "Some you meet and you're real pleased. You think, 'Wow, that's cool.' But others you'll think, 'Oh, kinda sorry I met you, cos I really liked you before.' But people I meet who are disappointing, well, I just block 'em out. It's like they don't even exist to me any more. It's like, 'Yeah, OK, you just became a ghost.'" He smiles: totally delightful and a tiny bit frightening.

Cheryl Cole Covers British GQ June 2012

She's gearing up for the June 18th release of her third studio album, A Million Lights, and, as part of the promotions, Cheryl Cole took over the cover of the June 2012 issue of British GQ magazine.

The 28-year-old English pop star oozed sexiness for the Mariano Vivanco shot spread while opening up about topics including her yearning for a husband and children, as well as her soft spot for Prince Harry.

With the issue set to hit newsstands on May 3rd, highlights from Miss Cole's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to British GQ!

On her desire to find a husband and have children:
"I'd love kids. I'm obsessed with babies. Of course I've thought about baby names. A million times. I like (the name) Alfie for a little boy. I know that is what I was put on Earth to do - to be a mother."

On Simon Cowell having reached out to her to make amends after her 'X Factor' firing:
“It felt great, actually. When I landed back in England there was a message from Simon, saying ‘Hello, Cheryl. So, now that you’ve blown me up in Afghanistan, can we talk?’ I’m not one of those people who holds a grudge.”

On her soft spot for Prince Harry:
"I think he's amazing and I think you can relate to him because he's made mistakes. He's cool. Although, I think I would be Cougarville in that relationship."

On missing intimacy now that she's a single lady:
