Kerry Washington Talks "Scandal" in Flare October 2013

She’s gearing up for the season premiere of her hit ABC series "Scandal" and during promotions, Kerry Washington graced the cover of Flare magazine’s October 2013 issue.

While donning designer duds from Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu for the Ruven Afandor-shot spread, The "Fantastic 4" beauty opened up about her childhood and even revealed some spoilers for the upcoming season.

On her experience with political situations:
"My mom’s a retired professor, so I grew up in a house where there was always talk about socioeconomic issues and feminist issues, and issues of race and culture, affirmative action and woman’s rights to choose."

On the upcoming season of "Scandal":
"There are some ways you want to be Olivia Pope and some ways you want to do a major intervention for her. I was like, 'I just don’t know how we’re gonna do this!' I had just gotten back from the Democratic National Convention where I’d done this speech about the importance of voter inclusivity and democracy and ‘We the People,’ and I come back and my character is spitting in the fact of all that."

On her successful career:
"I didn’t think I would do this for a living – because I didn’t know anybody who did. I come from an academic family, so I figured I would have a real job."

On her discipline to stay healthy:
"You have to think about eating right and sleeping right and taking care of your physical machine because the demands are so intense."

On ending her drinking habit:
"It was getting in the way of my perfectionism."
