Cannes prizewinner to direct film on Crimean unrest

Taisia Igumentseva will direct the drama potentially funded by a Russian state subsidy as the tensions between Russia and Ukraine spill over into the film industry

Taisia Igumentseva, a 25-year-old director who won a student film-making award at Cannes in 2012, has been announced as the director of a new film documenting the struggles in Crimea as the region was recently annexed by Russia.

The film was announced by producer Anatoly Sivushov, who somewhat distanced the film from the political disputes by saying "we would like to tell a story of real people, to focus primarily on the human angle". Igumentseva meanwhile said that "this topic has concerned millions of people for a long time, and I think that it is very current and presents a big opportunity for creative activity".
