Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, US/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.
Evil Dead (18)
(Fede Alvarez, 2013, US) Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci. 91 mins
Sam Raimi helped produce this respectful upgrade of his cabin-in-the-woods shocker, which offers big technical improvements, and rivers of bodily fluids, but no big surprises.
Olympus Has Fallen (15)
(Antoine Fuqua, 2013, US) Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman. 120 mins
Basically, Die Hard in the White House. Which is both as predictable and as guiltily entertaining as it sounds, with lone agent Butler jolted into John McClane mode after those pesky North Koreans kidnap the president.
Love Is All You Need (15)
(Susanne Bier, 2012, Den/Swe/Ita/Fra/Ger) Trine Dyrholm, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Bodnia. 116 mins
No prizes for guessing where this romcom is headed after widower Brosnan and cuckolded cancer patient Dyrholm literally bump into each other, then discover their offspring are getting married in Italy. As formulaic middle-aged romcoms go, it's fine.
Me And You (15)
(Bernardo Bertolucci, 2012, Ita) Tea Falco, Jacopo Olmi Antinori, Sonia Bergamasco. 96 mins
The once epic-minded director narrows his scale to a two-hander largely set in a basement, where two half-siblings come to hide out for their own reasons.
F*ck For Forest (18)
(Michal Marczak, 2012, Pol/Ger) 86 mins
Amateur porn and environmental activism make unlikely bedfellows in this bizarre documentary, which follows a hedonistic eco-hippie group all the way to their beloved Amazon, where they're in for a bit of surprise.
Bait (15)
(Kimble Rendall, 2012, Aus) Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson, Julian McMahon. 91 mins
After Snakes On A Plane, sharks in a shop. A tsunami strands Aussies in a flooded supermarket with great whites in this agreeably loony 3D B-movie.
The Words (15)
(Brian Klugman, Lee Sternthal, 2012, US) Bradley Cooper, Dennis Quaid, Jeremy Irons. 102 mins
Identity issues plague three levels of authors in this meta-literary thriller. For a story-within-a-story-within-a-story, it doesn't have much of a story.
