Box Office: "Underworld: Awakening" Soars Atop "Red Tails"

Grabbing ahold of the top spot immediately upon hitting theaters, "Underworld: Awakening" finds itself perched atop the pack at the box office over the weekend of January 20-22, 2012.

The Kate Beckinsale starring fantasy flick took in an estimated $9.8 million on opening day while expected to make $23.4 million over the course of the weekend.

Not too far behind is the George Lucas crafted Tuskegee airmen focused picture "Red Tails," which claimed the runner-up slot by garnering $6.2 million on Friday while anticipated to bring in a total of $17 million on it's opening weekend of release.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals are the Mark Wahlberg starring crime/action caper "Contraband" ($12.5 million), followed by another theatrical newcomer in the Sandra Bullock/Tom Hanks starring motion picture "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" ($9.5 million) and "Haywire" ($8.6 million).
